Baikaouren (Coptis quinquefolia) is a perennial plant belonging to the order Ranunculales, the Ranunculaceae family, and the Coptis genus. It is considered one of the spring ephemerals.

The name “Baikaouren” comes from the fact that its flowers resemble plum blossoms (Baika) and that its underground rhizome is used as a medicinal herb known in traditional Chinese medicine as Oren.

The well-known herbal formula Oren Gedokuto (Huanglian Jiedu Tang), used in traditional Chinese medicine, is composed of four medicinal herbs, with Oren (Coptis) as the main ingredient.

It is said that Dr. Tomitaro Makino, the renowned botanist, was inspired to pursue the field of botany because he found this fascinating and beautiful flower growing in the hills behind his childhood home. Preferring shaded areas over direct sunlight, Baikaouren thrives quietly in clusters under the partial shade of trees, earning it the nickname “The Fairy of the Winter Forest.”

A closer look at the flower reveals that what appear to be white petals are actually sepals. The true petals have evolved into nectar glands, forming tiny yellow spoon-shaped structures that hold nectar. Both the sepals and petals are arranged in sets of five, while the flower boasts approximately 50 stamens. Additionally, as suggested by its alternate name, Gokayou Oren (五加葉黄蓮), its leaves also grow in groups of five—making it a plant defined by the number five.

A famous anecdote tells of an aging Dr. Makino, bedridden in his later years. When one of his disciples brought him a Baikaouren from his hometown, he pressed his face to the flower and wept.

The logo of the Makino Botanical Garden features the motif of the plant’s five-lobed leaves, paying tribute to both the flower and the great botanist who cherished it.
