Tobiume (飛梅 – The Flying Plum Tree)

Among the many legendary plum trees,
Tobiume is one of the most famous. Let’s begin
by exploring the story behind this legendary tree.

The tale dates back to the year 901 AD (Shōtai 4).
At that time, Sugawara no Michizane, a high-ranking
court official, was falsely accused and exiled to
Dazaifu (in present-day Fukuoka) due to the
political machinations of Fujiwara no Tokihira,
    the Minister of the Left.

As Michizane was leaving his beloved hometown,
he recited a farewell poem to the plum tree he had
    cherished since childhood:

“When the east wind blows, let it bring your
fragrance, O plum blossoms.Even though your
master is gone, do not forget the spring.”

According to legend, the plum tree, deeply
    devoted to Michizane, miraculously flew
overnight to Dazaifu Tenmangū, the shrine
where he was later enshrined as the deity
of learning. This story is known as the
    Tobiume Legend.

There is also an alternative version of the
legend. A man named Shiratayū, who planned
to visit Michizane in Dazaifu, stopped by his
residence in the capital before setting off.
There, he received a letter from Michizane’s
wife along with a carefully uprooted section
of the cherished plum tree. Upon arriving in
Dazaifu, he jokingly exclaimed, “The plum tree
has flown to you!”, without revealing that he
    had carried it himself.

Today, this legendary plum tree still stands
beside the main hall of Dazaifu Tenmangū,
where it has been carefully preserved for
centuries. The name Tamagaki in its Japanese designation refers to the sacred fence
    traditionally planted around imperial palaces
and shrines. The tree was given this name
when it was planted near the shrine’s fence.

The plum tree featured in this photograph
was taken at the Kyoto Botanical Garden,
where another specimen of Tobiume is
    cultivated.

The Kyoto Botanical Garden plays a crucial
role in preserving Japan’s plant heritage,
ensuring the survival of historically significant
    trees.

    This institution carefully cultivates multiple
clonal specimens of plum, cherry, and camellia
trees from shrines and temples across Kyoto
and Nara. The emphasis is on preserving the
original DNA of these trees, making their
    survival especially important.

Even if the original trees at historic sites
deteriorate due to age or disease, the Kyoto
    Botanical Garden safeguards their genetic
    lineage. When necessary, these carefully
nurtured clones can be replanted at the
original locations to maintain the cultural
    landscape.

This photograph of Tobiume was taken while
listening to a guided tour by a knowledgeable
staff member at the Kyoto Botanical Garden.
