スズカケノキ ボンボリ状の実が可愛くぶら下がる樹木
鈴懸ノ木 （スズカケノキ）
ヤマモガシ目、スズカケノキ科、スズカケノキ属
洋名で、プラタナス （PLATANUS）と呼ばれる
落葉広葉の高木で、分類ではスズカケノキ科、
スズカケノキ属。樹高については高いものでは
５０ｍまでも伸びるものである。
写真は大阪の万博公園（＇７０ ＥＸＰＯ）の
敷地内にこれが何本も植ってるのを撮影した
ものだが、その高さには圧倒されてしまう。
この立派な樹木はアメリカ南東部や中西部を
原産とする落葉樹である。幹の真っ白な木肌
がとても美しく、アメリカ以外では欧州にも
多く渡り、街路樹としてもとても人気が高い
ものとなっている。
日本にも明治時代に渡来した際、新宿御苑や
日比谷公園へ植えられた後に都市緑化計画で
２万本という壮大なる街路樹計画がたてられ
都内を中心に何本もが植えられる様になる。
プラタナスの名称はこの時に一気に知られる
様になり一般の人にも愛される樹木となる。
一時は街路樹には良いとされていたこれだが
落葉が多く、小枝も良く落ち、毛綿状の種子
が拡散する事から、秋口のこれら清掃作業が
大変過ぎるとの理由で現代では新たにこれを
街路樹に植える動きは大幅に減少している。
パブリックウッドに適した樹木の条件とは、
長生きし、虫の発生を促さず、病気に強く、
落ちモノが少ない事と、そしてメンテナンス
の費用が掛からない事が必須となっている。
手離れが良いのが何よりなのである。とは
言ってもこのアメリカスズカケノキは樹齢が
約４００年にも渡るので既に植樹されている
ものは、まだまだこれからも長生きしていく。

In Japanese, this deciduous broadleaf tree is called Suzukake no Ki (鈴懸ノ木). Classified under the Platanaceae family and Platanus genus, it can grow to impressive heights—some reaching up to 50 meters.
The photo was taken in Expo ‘70 Commemorative Park in Osaka, where numerous Platanus trees have been planted. Their towering presence is truly awe-inspiring.
This majestic tree is native to the southeastern and midwestern United States. With its strikingly white bark, it has also spread widely across Europe, where it is a highly popular street tree.
Platanus was introduced to Japan during the Meiji era, first being planted in Shinjuku Gyoen and Hibiya Park. Later, as part of an ambitious urban greening project, 20,000 trees were planted, particularly in central Tokyo. This large-scale planting made the name Platanus widely known and beloved by the public.
At one time, it was considered an ideal street tree. However, its tendency to shed many leaves and small branches, as well as the dispersal of fluffy seeds in autumn, made maintenance excessively demanding. As a result, new plantings of Platanus as street trees have significantly declined in recent years.
The ideal conditions for a public-use tree include longevity, resistance to pests and diseases, minimal shedding of leaves and seeds, and low maintenance costs. A tree that requires little upkeep is the most practical choice.
That said, the American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) has a lifespan of approximately 400 years, meaning that the existing trees will continue to thrive for generations to come.
和名のこの鈴懸ノ木（スズカケノキ）の由来は
何かであるが、このプラタナスの実は写真にも
ある通り、まん丸いのがぶら下がっていて山伏
（ヤマブシ）が上半身に纏う装束を結袈裟と呼び
その胸の部分にある装飾物であるこれら鈴梵天
（スズボンテン）、これの俗称を鈴掛（スズカケ）
と呼ぶものである。
The origin of the Japanese name Suzukake no Ki (鈴懸ノ木) comes from the appearance of the Platanus fruit. As seen in the photo, the tree bears round, hanging fruits. This resemblance is linked to the attire of Yamabushi (mountain ascetic monks), specifically the Ketsu-kesa, a type of robe worn on the upper body. The chest area of this robe is adorned with decorative ornaments called Suzubonten (鈴梵天), which are colloquially referred to as Suzukake (鈴掛).
弁慶を含め、山伏が衣装にぶら下げるものを
そう呼んでおり、丸いフワフワの球体を指し
そう呼ぶ。イラストはネットから拾ったが
少し鈴掛が大きすぎるかもである。
この黒い実、となりのトトロに出てくるあの
煤渡（ススワタリ）、マックロクロスケにも
見えて、とても可愛らしいものでもある。

These black fruits also resemble the Susuwatari (Soot Sprites) from My Neighbor Totoro, also known as Makkuro Kurosuke, making them look quite adorable.
