I grew up in Northridge, California, which is in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles. Yep. So I claim Los Angeles. Typically I'll just say I'm from Los Angeles, California, but we're going in depth right now. My mom is a college professor and taught at CSUN, which is Cal State University Northridge. And we lived right near there.

Well, Iâm Los Angeles, born and raised, and I started making music when I was about five years old. I started playing piano and grew up around my parentsâ records and loved classical music originally and got sidetracked by the saxophone for a second. It was cool having jazz and realizing the thing I loved doing the most was writing songs and singing, which Iâd always done since I was a kid and I went fully into that, and thatâs what Iâve been doing.

Music came when I was five years old. My sister was taking piano lessons. And I was like, What is this? I want to take piano lessons. Why did she get to do it? So I studied with Mrs. Cohen, who was like an 85 year old Jewish grandmother, who would come over to the house and little five year old me would sit down and she would unpack Smarties those like chalky candies, and put them on the side of the piano. And I'd have to play something like a five finger exercise. And then I'd get one smarties. You know, is like very, very old school.

Joey : I picked up the guitar in high school. I sit down with elton john song book and learn but I didn't really take it seriously. It was kind of my passion project as well, because I was kind of deep into this instrumental piano and then saxophone.
Leo :Â So in high school, you're playing saxophone, too.
Joey : I started playing when I was 10. And I was like, forget this piano. I don't care. My parents said, you need to study classical piano until you're done with high school. This is mandatory saxophone. You can do it. You can't do it without you don't have to do it whenever I was pissed off about that. And look at me now mom and dad. Thanks, Mom and Dad.

First band you were in?
My friends and I had a jazz combo in high school. We used to play gigs at this bar in Van Nuys called McRedâs. It kinda felt like a biker bar but people would bring their dogs inside. We would set up and play jazz standards in there. It was pretty weird and great. Those were the first gigs I ever played.

I would go to these jazz jam sessions and Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Brandon Coleman. He's amazing musicians, they would be playing gigs there or playing at the jazz jams or just hanging out in the neighborhood. They always sounded like that. They always sounded like the genius musicians that they are. And now they're literally on the world stage in Kamasi Washington was the guy who played saxophone on everybody's gig, he showed up to everyone's gig, you know, and I'm sure he played a lot of free gigs. You know, and I'm sure he played a lot of free gigs. And now he is getting this amazing spotlight and this kind of platform to showcase this thing that he's always been doing and evolving. And it's, it's sort of exposing his genius and the genius of Leimert Park to the rest of the world. And I think it's a beautiful thing.

You grew up in Los Angeles, and one of your first notable musical accomplishments was playing a role in Henry Grimesâ return to jazz in 2003, when you were still in high school.
Oh my god, how did you find out about that?
Google. I saw Nick Rosenâs name mentioned, and so I googled his name and your name together, and that story came up.
This is a story thatâŠ. hasnât gone untold, especially in Los Angeles. Henry Grimes was one of the most in-demand jazz bass players in New York in the late â50s and â60s. He played with everyone from Sonny Rollins to Thelonious Monk to Albert Ayler to Benny Goodman, and studied with Robert Zimmerman, whoâs one of the most famous classical bass players of all time. And then he just disappearedâand he disappeared for almost 35 years. He didnât play any bass. And then he was rediscovered. Once we found out he was rediscovered, a teacher named Steve Isoardi reached out to Nick Rosenâhe knew that Nick was really into Albert Ayler.
Nick Rosen deserves a lot of credit for reaching out to Henryâhe used to call him every day for two weeks, until he finally got ahold of him. We started hanging out with him and jamming with him. That was in my jazz saxophone days. We were playing music with him, and he hadnât played music in 35 years, and all these people in the community came together out of interest, just like, âWow! Henry Grimes is back!â
We started jamming with him, then we started playing shows with him. We did that for a year, and he sort of got back on his feetâmusically, he got back on the horse. Heâs an amazing, beautiful person. He went back to New York. Iâm glad that the L.A. part of the story is getting recognized. It was amazing, I was in high school, and being in high school and getting to experience all of that was really important.

Dosik, who hails from Los Angeles, got his start playing piano before switching to saxophone in the third grade. After finding a good teacher and absorbing large quantities of Coltrane, it wasnât long before Dosik was blowing along with some of the worldâs top musicians â Arthur Blythe, Nels Cline, Henry Grimes, Ndugu Chancler and Azar Lawrence, to name a few.
âInitially, it just felt good to blow air and speak with it,â Dosik said. âBut eventually, it began to feel more like an extension of my body.â
After arriving at the University last year, Joey sought out fellow musicians to form a quartet, which came to include Music junior Matt Endahl on the piano and Music senior Chad Hochberg on drums. After a year of playing together, local bass extraordinaire and Music senior Andrew Kratzat stepped into the picture, providing the firm foundation they needed. âAndyâs probably too humble to admit it, but he really gives us our sense of definition as a group,â Dosik said.
That kind of unity and sincere respect for one another is a trait that distinguishes the quartet from other groups. âWhen Iâm playing with these guys, itâs like being able to jump off a cliff and have no fear. Theyâre my safety net.â
Besides providing a flexible framework, the other members are accomplished musicians in their own right. From fronting avant-garde acts to displays of individual virtuosity, this rhythm section is composed of some of the best talent Ann Arbor has to offer.
âWe want to be able to play anything,â said Dosik, in reference to the groupâs diverse repertoire. Whether soulful selections like Marvin Gayeâs âWhatâs Going On?â or the more atmospheric world of Radiohead

Leo : Apparently Theo Katzman went into the jazz school as a drummer apparently. Joey Dosik also went to revolutionize the saxophone, you're all there you buy the same age same class?
Woody : Now the was a senior when I was a freshman. Joey was either a senior grad within the same year I think this year. So they were like super quality member at you know college still has that difference between seniors and fresh total it's less than high school but like they were in another world.

First roommate?
I lived with the same five guys from my sophomore to my senior year in college. We all became very close. That time still feels like the most important years of my life. We still keep in touch today and some of us still collaborate and make music together.
