Facts I learnt from the Behind the Song podcast:

The music is by Tom Petty's Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell
The song utilises the Linn drum machine which is also in use on Billy Idol's Eyes Without A Face and Aha's Take On Me. The Linn drum machine came out in 1982 and Mike Campbell was playing around with it to make demos.
Played the demo to Tom Petty and producer Jimmy Iovine who were underwhelmed, and Iovine suggested changing the chords and chorus. Later the suggestion changed to giving the song to Don Henley, who was looking for new songs for his solo album
Campbell played the song to Don Henley at his house and was surprised to get a call back later claiming that Henley has written the best song of his life to Campbell's demo
Henley's lyric writing approach is to play the music in his car as he drives until the words come to him. He has been doing that since he was in The Eagles.
My note: The first verse of the song is literally describing what he sees from the car. "Nobody on the road, nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air, the summer's out of reach
Empty lake, empty streets, the sun goes down alone
I'm driving by your house, though I know you're not home"
Based on an interview with NME, Henley said about the Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac - it's people of his generation selling out as they get older and embracing the spoils of money while trying to retain coolness. And how they might look at that with mild disgust (My note: I get it, I had a Grateful Dead pencil case in high school)
Ray-Ban Wayfarers were back in the 1980's with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd sporting them for The Blues Brothers and Tom Cruise in Risky Business. Originally popular because James Dean wore them in the early 1950's. Now it's just Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses…
My note: "I thought I knew what love was, what did I know" - Paying for prostitutes, let alone those that are minors, is not love. It's called being an asshole and then some.
