The rainbow-watcher
Ⅰ

I want to create the most amazing sweets no one has ever tasted.
The cake my grandmother made for me when I was little.
The cookies that turned out rock-hard the first time I baked them with my friends.
The chocolate I made for my first love but ended up eating all myself...
I want to make delicious sweets packed with memories like these.
Clutching her sketchbook filled with designs and a full set of baking tools, the girl crossed mountains, rivers, and valleys to reach a big, big city.
To enter the sweets competition held there. To have people taste the best sweets she made with all her heart.
Ⅱ

The girl was startled when she came to the city. Everyone held square boards in their hands, staring down at them. They didn't look at anything with their own eyes; instead, they held up their boards, read something, and nodded.
“Oh, what a beautiful rainbow,” murmured an old woman who spotted one in the sky after the rain.
The people around silently pointed the board toward the rainbow. Then they walked away laughing.
When the girl said, “It's truly beautiful.”the old woman smiled sadly.
Ⅲ

The streets were filled with unfamiliar signs.
The ultimate dining experience for you.
Stay healthy and beautiful no matter how much you eat or drink.
What does that mean?
The girl stared at the strange parts in the display window.
A perfect stomach.
An all-purpose intestine.
The world's finest tongue. Beside them, holographic letters danced.
A rich vocabulary for describing flavors, updated daily!!
Ⅳ

At the competition venue, the girl made sweets with utmost dedication.
Her motifs were her grandmother's cake, rock-like cookies, and her first love's chocolate.
They should have turned out perfect. They were filled with memories, looked wonderful, and tasted amazing!
After all, every customer at her shop had loved them.
The judges sampled them one after another.
It was as if they had stomachs with no limits.
The girl held her breath, waiting for the results.
Ⅴ

The girl stood speechless before the display panel showing the results.
The same people kept winning multiple awards.
Touching the panel played a stream of flowery praise for the confections they had submitted.
She could also see photos of the sweets. They were beautifully colorful. Yet somehow, they felt hollow.
Those at the top of the rankings can sign contracts as confectioners.
Walking past the judges shaking hands and smiling, the girl walked on.
Ⅵ

Sitting on a bench in the small park, gazing at the sky, She heard a voice ask, “What's wrong?” It was that old woman She'd seen watching the rainbow.
As the girl talked about the competition, she began to cry, and the old woman said, “That competition is no good anymore.”
"The judges there can't taste anything anymore. Everyone's started using artificial organs. Taste sensations from artificial tongues and organs are transmitted directly to the brain. So even their reactions come out automatically.“
”That's ridiculous...“
”They're convinced they can judge taste and appearance that way.“
”Can they really tell with that method? Are people satisfied eating things judged like that?“
”That's all they sell. I guess they have no choice but to be satisfied."
The old woman sighed.
Ⅶ
“It's been years since I've had such wonderful sweets. The kind crafted with care from someone's cherished memories, sometimes tasting like tears—such gentle treats.”
“Um...”
The girl timidly offered a cookie that looked like a stone.
“If you'd like...”
The old woman ate it. And tears welled up in her eyes.
"Yes, yes. This taste. This is what sweets should be like. Ah, I used to make lots of these when I was young. And I became the town's finest artisan."
Ⅷ

“You bake sweets too?”
The old woman glanced back at the skyscrapers and pointed at a large sign. “That's my company.”
Seeing the girl's wide-eyed expression, the old woman smiled.
"Everyone was thrilled. People who couldn't eat what they wanted because of illness could finally enjoy all kinds of foods again. It was a dream invention. But things just kept escalating. Eventually, people started saying the human tongue couldn't be trusted. Personal memories or feelings aren't universal, they said. So, only food and sweets tailored to trends were made and judged as accurate. Eating food or sweets no longer made anyone remember someone or something, or shed tears.“
The girl looked down.
”I'm going home.“
”Where?“
”To my village. Over mountains, across rivers, far, far away. And I'll make sweets again. I want people to eat them and say, ‘That was truly delicious,’ from the bottom of their hearts. I want to make things that make them think about all sorts of things, that bring back memories...“
”I see,“ the old woman said with a smile.
”I want to eat your sweets again someday. Keep up the good work."
Ⅸ

Several years passed, and the girl grew into an adult. More customers began visiting the small workshop deep in the mountains, allowing her to make a living. But one day, a customer who had come from the city said:
“This confection has absolutely no flavor.”
“It looks tacky and doesn't photograph well either.”
“I heard it was popular, so I came to try it—what a disappointment.”
Ⅹ

Looking downcast, a well-dressed young man entered and ordered several items. After settling his bill, he asked,
“Can I eat here?”
“Yes, please use that table. I can bring you a drink if you'd like.”
“Then I'll have tea, please.”
Ⅺ

The young man drank his tea and ate a white cookie shaped like a cloud. Then he said,
“This tastes very much like the ones my grandmother used to make. Similar, yet completely different... It brought back so many memories.”

“This is what I do,”
the young man replied, projecting a three-dimensional image of a company logo, an impressive office building, and a sign onto a small tablet. That sign and logo were identical to the building the old woman had pointed out in the park.
“My grandmother told me. She said the artisan who makes the sweets you always wanted to try should be here.”
“Grandma! Could it be—”
“My grandmother passed away. She refused to have an artificial organ implanted, and in the end, she couldn't eat anything. But you know, until the very end, she ate what she truly wanted with her own tongue and heart, and told me about it in her own words.”
The young man said, “People keep changing. That's just the times we live in. Technological innovation has expanded human potential. Things that were once just dreams, medical treatments that were given up on, have become possible. There are many good aspects to it, but...”
The young man stopped in front of the autonomous vehicle that had come to pick him up and said.
“Humans have memories. We forget that memories are the true treasures no one can take away, but I don't want to forget. Your sweets hold that. I'll come again.”
“Yes.”
Leaving the girl bowing deeply, the young man's car drove away.
Beyond the mountain, the girl saw a rainbow, even larger than the one that day.
