Are you fed-up with garbage, full-of-shit sites where nobody actually communicates, such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter? Do you wish your old friends who've migrated to those sites would return to LiveJournal? The the_lj_revival community has been set up with that aim in mind, and you are invited to join it. If you are already on LiveJournal and still have a Facebook profile, and would like to see more people returning to LJ or setting up accounts here, we invite you to post a link to this community on your Facebook Timeline. If you would like to find out who is still using LiveJournal and make contact with those who are already here, you are invited to copy and paste the 'about me' questions on the profile page and post them with your answers to the community.

Day of Silence....

Thursday, April 13, 2006 | 12:41 PM

Ok so.....no one ever updates this so I will. I will also try to update it more often, though it is getting near the end of the school year.

The Day of Silence is April 26.

You can sign up during all three lunches on the Monday and Tuesday when we get back from vacation, also known as April 24 and 25.

Though some of you already understand the purpose of The Day of Silence, I would like to give some information for those who may be out of the loop.

People who sign up for the day of silence will (attempt) to be silent for one school day to recognize and protest the descrimination and harrassment (the silencing) experienced by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trangendered people and the people who support them.

A163 is the "safe zone" for anyone participating in the day of silence on april 26 to come and escape any harrassment.

The purpose of this is not to get out of participating in class. So, please talk to your teachers before the 26th. This is not an excuse to get out of a presentation or other class work.

If you want to participate you must sign up and then attend a MANDATORY training meeting on TUESDAY, APRIL 25 in A 140 at 2:30.

At the end of the day on April 26, we will have a party when we break the silence. all are welcome!

If you have any questions or know anyone with questions about the Day of Silence, please ask me.

Phil Bildner's New Gay-Themed Teen Novel, "Playing the Field" (and it's a comedy!)

Sunday, February 26, 2006 | 8:41 AM

Hello…

I know I’ve contacted a number of you individually so if you’ve received an e-mail from me directly, or if I’ve contacted you through Myspace I apologize in advance.

I’m trying to get the word out about my new gay-themed, teen novel “Playing the Field” that just came out this week.

I’m reaching out to Gay-Straight Alliances, young adult reading clubs, teen pride groups and other such organizations because I think the novel will be of interest to you. “Playing the Field” is an over the top look at high school life, and the main storylines are focused around the school’s GSA.

Without question, the novel is already rubbing some people the wrong way. Because of the subject matter, some reviewers have refused to review it and some schools have refused to include it in their collections. Whatever.

To be quite honest, the language and sexual content is rather tame (comparatively speaking), but what adult readers are not quite able to grasp is how frank and evolved the characters are.

My intent was never to create the next great piece of teen literature. I wanted to create a fun read with a cool message of tolerance, and I think I did.

“Playing the Field” is available in stores (Borders, Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, etc.) and on-line (Amazon and Barnes & Noble). I’ve also included a synopsis of the book below, lifted from the inside flap copy. If you know of anyone who might be interested in the book, please spread the word. In the world of teen novels and young adult literature, nothing beats word of mouth and Myspace!

I’d love to hear from you, and if you hear of others who have read the book, please encourage them to contact me as well. I enjoy the feedback...even negative feedback because that’s when you really know you’ve struck a chord!

Increase the Peace,

Phil Bildner

Playing the Field:

"Insightful, provocative, and laugh-out-loud funny…An inside-out look at high school sports."
--Pete Hautman, National Book Award winner for Godless

"Phil Bildner's screwball comedy sings with wit and originality and a refreshingly frank and funny exploration of bias and discrimination against gays. Like Darcy Miller's magical pitching arm, it sinks a fastball straight into your heart."
-- Tracy Mack, author of Birdland

All Darcy wants is to play on the baseball team, to hear her name announced, "Now batting, Darcy Miller," to play the field. Is that so much to ask?

Unfortunately, it might be. In a few short months, Darcy Miller goes from typical senior in high school to candidate for Jerry Springer. Her mom has started dating Darcy's principal, the very principal whose son Darcy happened to have started a huge flirt-fest with, now brought to a screeching halt. When she decides to let her mom go to bat (so to speak) for her to play on the baseball team, Darcy thinks things are starting to look up. After all, Principal Basset caves and decides to let her play. But he has two conditions that shake up her entire game: She must pretend to be a lesbian (WHAT?) and she must join the GSA, the Gay-Straight Alliance (WHAT? WHAT?), the president of which happens to be her best friend -- make that her ex-best friend, Josh. Okay, Darcy's senior year might seem complicated at first. It's not. It's insurmountably, unforgettably, and -- most of the time -- hilariously complicated.

But if anyone can handle it, it's Darcy. She'll do anything just to play the field.

Hey there everybody!

The Arlington GSA is holding a movie night this Friday (December 9th) from 5 untill 8. It will be held at the high school in Ms. Holt's room (that's 506.. and yes there will be signs directing you from the main lobby). We're going to be watching "But I'm a Cheerleader" which I hear is extremely funny. It's about a cheerleader who doesnt like kissing her boyfriend, so she gets sent away to a camp that tries to make kids straight. Good plot, right? There will be food and maybe pizza if people seem to want it. Bring more food if you'd like (c'mon kids, this is the Arlington GSA, the more food the better!) and of course bring FRIENDS!!

If you have any questions find me at school or e-mail me at arlington_gsa@yahoo.com .

Thanks,
Jesse

(PS. please keep sending this to as many friends and schools as you can!)

Thanks

Despite getting marriage rights in Canada, Oregon has decided not to let pass a civil unions bill. In fact, it didn't even come to vote.

Well, there was some hope for a while, but two weeks ago the House Speaker did say that she would not allow the bill to be voted upon. She got her wish, even after the bill was gutted of everything useful.

In other news, I move into my dorm on Saturday, September 3. I've already been informed of my roommates, who all live in New England. As a reminder to those who want me to be at Crossings this coming year: I can only come to the high school on Fridays and during my handful of vacations, which are as follows...

  1. November 18-27
  2. December 19-January 2
  3. February 23-March 6
I also get out of school for the year on May 18, so I will be able to attend any meetings being held at the end of the year, although I have to wonder how many people will be attending at that point. (How many seniors do we have this year in the group? A few. Let's see if they stick around after they have their classes end.)

Hmm. Nothing else to say. I hope that you're enjoying your summer! ^^

Hmm...

Okay I had no idea where to post this, so I decided to put it here. (Just a random musing I had earlier today)

You've all seen those commercials for Walgreens, with that town called Perfect, right? Well, as I was watching one of those commercials today, I started thinking. If Perfect was a real place, what would the people be like? Perfect, yes, but perfect by whose definition?
Would every woman be thin, white, blonde and beautiful? Would every man be "tall, dark and handsome", with a finely chiseled body? Would everyone have flawless skin and dazzling white teeth? And would everyone be straight?

Just crossed my mind...

A new FX network show, 30 days, puts an ignorant person into the shoes of their least favorite minority. An episode of it that you will find to be interesting features a homophobic republican who they relocate into the gayest part of San Francisco, with a gay room mate, and gay people all around. It should be a fun episode if anyone has cable. More information about the show and the episode can be found on the web site site. The show is on every Wednesday at 10 and 11. The episode is not on this week but should be on next week. A schedule can be found on the FX Network site under schedule, but doesn't go into next week.
