My Noble Disgrace (Heir of Cambria Book 2)

4.7 out of 5 stars (4)

Now that she has the throne, it’s the last thing she wants.

Ever since the betrayal, all Mara can think about is redeeming herself by bringing Graham home as the rightful heir of Cambria. With Cael rising in power as the head of the Academy and determined to keep his title, mysterious weapons and devices begin showing up in the hands of his followers, leading to the discovery of a dangerous secret—an arsenal of long-lost forbidden technology that he alone can access.

In her desperation to put Graham on the throne and earn his forgiveness, Mara is forced to do Cael’s dark bidding, but what Cael doesn’t know is that Mara is using him, too. Afraid that she has no future with the man she loves, and eager to escape her disgrace, Mara sets her sights on finding a way to leave her broken kingdom behind.

Book 2 of the The Heir of Cambria dystopian series. Follows His Noble Ruin.

As with the first book in this series, my favorite thing was the storytelling. I kept thinking I would read a few chapters before bed, then find myself staying up late reading. I enjoyed learning more about each character as they found (or put) themselves in different situations. I'm looking forward to the next book!

    Great Character Progression

I think what makes this book stand out is the complex protagonist, Mara, and her evolution throughout the book. Mara’s character progression can be frustrating at times as she seems to slide back and forth between trying to be a good person and being completely self-interested, but it makes her altruistic moments particularly compelling. Throughout the book, Mara is trying to decide who she is and how she wants to live her life. Her floundering feels believable after facing the fact that her life was built on a lie. Her process of experimenting, failing, and learning feels true to the experience of reconstructing one’s beliefs.

I love that the book wraps up in a very satisfying way while still leaving me intrigued about the next.
