I had similar problems, what worked for me was running Ghostty with EGL_PLATFORM=surfaceless as an env var and this small change, although you might not need the second one.

If it works you should see the line info(opengl): EGL vendor=Mesa Project in the logs change to info(opengl): EGL vendor=NVIDIA, i.e. your Nvidia driver actually gets used instead of falling back to Mesa.

Yep, that works as you said and I need that change.

Running just EGL_PLATFORM=surfaceless ./ghostty without that change makes ghostty just quit and trigger an assertion at assert(self.font_grid_set.count() == 0); in App.deinit()

Since #14052 was applied, I've noticed that characters I type occasionally disappear for a moment and then get redrawn. The issue appears to be resolved by applying the following patch:

After using #14279 (pluiedev's fixes) and launching ghostty with EGL_PLATFORM=surfaceless, I noticed frames flickering which I think was this problem?

With #14304 (your patch), I don't notice it anymore after using it for like a day.

I also hacked c.eglGetDisplay(id) to use c.eglGetPlatformDisplay(c.EGL_PLATFORM_SURFACELESS_MESA, id, null) so I don't need to launch ghostty with EGL_PLATFORM=surfaceless.
I wonder if EGL_PLATFORM=surfaceless will be needed on release?

Yep, we previously had another similar bugaround the same spot with the initial PR and reintroduced a missing sync again when the LatestFrame.push() to present was refactored in so just added comments and confirmed the issue

I noticed poor performance overall and high CPU usage on Linux Wayland+Nvidia since updating from e2e53f8 to d4c88d8. I didn't do much digging and did not try bisecting to figure out which exact commit caused it, but downgrading back to the previous version I was using seems to have fixed it. Possibly related?

The new version can now render multiple times per frame present, if data is streaming in the terminal 3+ draws may happen per visibly presented frame which is a drawback but intentional with triple buffering behaviour. It can be improved though

You might have the same problem as the OP. Try checking in a debug build if you get the line info(opengl): EGL vendor=Mesa Project in the logs or EGL vendor=NVIDIA. If you see the first one, Ghostty falls back to software rendering which would explain the poor performance/high CPU usage.

I checked this by seeing readPixels calls on the vulkan side but not opengl

Because on my AMD blocking gles-api caused rendering to fail. Allowing vulkan again just came along for the ride.
