Motivation for the change, related issues

Closes #4320

Switching a running Playground to multisite in Site Settings used to require creating a fresh Playground, which throws away the current site's state (a core PR build, users, plugins, content). The enableMultisite step already converts an installed site, so this change lets single-site → multisite apply to the current Playground. Multisite → single-site still requires a fresh Playground, because there is no clean way to reverse the conversion.

Implementation details

  • site-settings-actions.ts: adds an apply-when-enabled setting type. Multisite uses it: turning it on is applied in place, and turning it off still asks for a fresh Playground.
  • updateRuntimeSettings() accepts an optional enableMultisite. When it's set, the site runs a one-step enableMultisite Blueprint compiled through compileBlueprintV1, which also installs WP-CLI. The conversion runs before any PHP or networking reboot, so changing both still reboots only once, and the site returns to the page you were on.
  • After a successful conversion, multisite=yes is saved in the site's originalUrlParams, so the settings form shows the box ticked and copied setup URLs include it.
  • The autosaved and stored settings forms pass enableMultisite only when the box goes from off to on. Temporary Playgrounds are unchanged.
  • Docs: updated web-instance.md and the Sites API reference.

No breaking changes: enableMultisite is a new optional field.

Known limitations:

  • enableMultisite rejects URLs with a port, so on local dev (127.0.0.1:4400) Apply shows that error. Use the playground.test setup or a deployed build.
  • A site that became multisite through a Blueprint step still shows the box unticked, as before this PR. Ticking it re-runs the conversion, which shows an error in the form.

Testing Instructions (or ideally a Blueprint)

Use a host without a port (a deployed preview or playground.test).

  1. Open Playground and wait for the Autosaved badge.
  2. Create some state, e.g. publish a post or install a plugin.
  3. Open Site Settings and tick Create a multisite network.
  4. Confirm Apply to this Playground is enabled, then click it.
  5. Confirm the admin bar shows My Sites and the post or plugin from step 2 is still there.
  6. Reopen Site Settings and confirm the box is ticked. Untick it and confirm Apply is disabled with "Changing multisite requires a fresh Playground."
  7. Optional: on a fresh single-site Playground, change the PHP version and tick multisite together, then Apply. The site should reboot once on the new PHP version as a multisite network.

Unit tests: npx nx test playground-website --testFile=site-settings-actions.spec.ts

📝 Walkthrough

Site Settings can enable multisite on the current Playground. The runtime API runs the enableMultisite Blueprint step and records multisite=yes in the site's original URL search parameters. Disabling multisite and changing WordPress version or language still require a fresh Playground.

Changes: In-place multisite conversion

updateRuntimeSettings accepts optional enableMultisite. When requested, it runs the enableMultisite Blueprint step and records multisite=yes in the original URL search parameters. Matching PHP and networking settings avoid an additional reload after conversion. The API documentation describes the option and fresh-Playground requirements.

Enabling multisite applies to the current Playground. Disabling it requires a fresh Playground. Both stored and autosaved forms request conversion only when multisite is newly enabled. Tests cover enabling, disabling, and combined setting changes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #4320 has one active coding objective. Single-site to multisite must convert the running Playground in place. Current state must be kept. Multisite to single-site must stay on the fresh-Playground path.

Evidence at head:

  • In-place conversion: site-management-api-middleware.ts adds enableMultisiteOnSite. In updateRuntimeSettings, when enableMultisite is set, it runs before the runtime reboot path. It compiles a one-step enableMultisite Blueprint with compileBlueprintV1 and runs it on the live client with runBlueprintV1Steps. This reuses the existing step, as the issue requests.
  • Already-multisite guard: the helper runs is_multisite() first and skips conversion when the site is already a network. This matches the commit 'Skip conversion for existing multisite'.
  • State preservation: the conversion runs on the running client. No new site is created.
  • Single-reboot behavior: when PHP and networking are unchanged, the helper returns without a reload. Otherwise the existing runtime update path runs once.
  • Offer in place: per the supplied summary, site-settings-actions.ts changes multisite to apply-when-enabled. getFreshPlaygroundReason returns a reason only when the new value is falsy. Multisite to single-site therefore keeps the fresh-Playground reason.
  • Form wiring: the stored form diff could not be read because its changed blob is missing from the checkout. The stored and autosaved forms passing enableMultisite only on off-to-on rests on the supplied summary, not on a read of the diff. This does not block the verdict, because the conversion path itself is verified in the middleware diff.
  • Tests: per the summary, site-settings-actions.spec.ts covers both directions of getFreshPlaygroundReason.

The wordpress.html previewer forwarding gap is excluded. The issue marks it as a possible separate issue, and the PR objectives exclude it.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Every changed area ties to issue #4320:

  • site-management-api-middleware.ts: adds the optional enableMultisite argument, the Blueprint compile and run imports, and enableMultisiteOnSite. These implement the conversion. The multisite=yes write to originalUrlParams keeps the settings form and copied setup URLs accurate after conversion. The isRuntimeUnchanged restructuring keeps the single-reboot behavior when PHP and networking also change.
  • site-settings-actions.ts and its spec: add the apply-when-enabled classification that the issue requests.
  • Stored and autosaved forms: pass the trigger for the conversion, per the supplied summary.
  • Docs (sites-api/01-index.md, web-instance.md): describe the new option and the fresh-Playground rule. These support the behavior change.

No unrelated change appears in the reviewed diffs.

Unresolved uncertainty, not a scope issue: enableMultisiteOnSite records multisite=yes through updateSite. It builds the new originalUrlParams from the site object captured before conversion. The unchanged reboot path after the branch was not in the supplied hunks. If that path writes a full site object from the earlier capture, it could overwrite originalUrlParams. This is a correctness question. It does not make a change out of scope.

🟡 Minor · Guard enableMultisite before replay executes… · site-management-api-middleware.ts:1005-1018

packages/playground/website/src/lib/state/redux/site-management-api-middleware.ts:1005-1018
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Guard enableMultisite before replay executes conversion.

When a Blueprint creates the network through another step, enabling the checkbox records multisite=yes without running conversion. Sharing that site then replays the Blueprint, and the resolver appends enableMultisite. The Blueprint creates the network first, so wp core multisite-convert receives an already-multisite installation and fails with This already is a multisite installation. This blocks the setup-URL replay.

Add the multisite check at the start of enableMultisite so both the settings path and replay path treat an already-multisite site as a no-op.
