Temporary recovery helper for the September 2026 Excel copy/paste regression.
Microsoft has acknowledged that Excel paste operations can fail silently after the September 2026 Office security updates. This project helps administrators move affected perpetual/volume Office installations back to a known-good build.
| Product | Recovery target |
|---|---|
| Office 2016 MSI | Removes Excel update KB5002914 when the known affected build is detected |
| Office 2019 Volume Click-to-Run | 16.0.10417.20197 |
| Office LTSC 2021 Volume Click-to-Run | 16.0.14334.20848 |
| Office LTSC 2024 Volume Click-to-Run | 16.0.17932.20910 |
The script detects the installed Office family first. It stops rather than changing an unsupported product.
- Close all Office applications.
- Open PowerShell as Administrator.
- Run:
powershell.exe -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File '.\Excel-CopyPaste-Issue-Fixer.ps1'The execution-policy bypass applies only to that PowerShell process.
- Wait until the script finishes removing the buggy update or rolling Office back to the approved version.
- Reboot your system.
- Test the result in Excel after a reboot: Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V, formula dragging, and AutoFill.
- Temporarily exclude the exact bad Office package in your patch-management product. Otherwise it can be installed again.
- A rollback can remove security fixes. Monitor the Microsoft KB and test a corrected update on a pilot device before removing the exclusion.
- This is an administrator convenience script, not an official Microsoft tool.
