[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Portuguese Portugal, from Latin Portucale < Portus Cale (former name of what is now the city of Vila Nova de Gaia), from portus + Callus, which is disputed:
- From the name of the Gallaeci, a Celtic tribe of Iberia.
- From Latin calidus (“warm”).
- From Ancient Greek Καλλίς (Kallís, “Beautiful”), referring to the Douro valley; see καλός (kalós, “beautiful”).
- An Iberian pronunciation of Ancient Greek Γαῖα (Gaîa, “goddess of the Earth”).

- (General American) IPA(key): /ˈpɔɹt͡ʃəɡəl/
- (General American, rare) IPA(key): /ˈpɔɹtuɡɑːl/
Proper noun
[edit]Portugal
- A country in Southern Europe, on the Iberian Peninsula. Official name: Portuguese Republic. Capital and largest city: Lisbon.
- 2000, Glanville Price, Encyclopedia of the languages of Europe, reprint, illustrated edition, Wiley-Blackwell, →ISBN, page 367:
- A distinction is usually made between Old Portuguese (português antigo, português arcaico), referring to the period from the earliest texts to 1540, Classical Portuguese (1540-1850), and Modern Portuguese (1850 to the present). There is sometimes a further subdivision of the Old Portuguese period into a Galician-Portuguese period (origins to 1350), during which the linguistic and cultural unit of Galicia and Portugal remained strong, and the Old Portuguese period proper (1350-1540).
- 2025 May 7, Ben Morse, “‘Proud of you’: Cristiano Ronaldo’s eldest son earns first call-up for Portugal Under-15 national team”, in CNN[1], archived from the original on 25 February 2026:

- Portugal (a country in Southern Europe, on the Iberian Peninsula)
Norwegian Bokmål
[edit]

Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Portuguese Portugal (“Portugal”). The Portuguese name continues Old Galician-Portuguese Portugal, from Late Latin Portucale, a univerbation of Portus Cale (“Port of Cale”), a Roman place-name associated with the area of present-day Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
The first element is portus (“harbour, port”), from Proto-Italic *portus, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pértus (“crossing, passage”). The origin of Cale is uncertain, though a Celtic origin has been proposed.
Cognates and parallel forms include Norwegian Nynorsk Portugal, Danish Portugal, Swedish Portugal, German Portugal, Dutch Portugal, French Portugal, Spanish Portugal, Galician Portugal and English Portugal.
Pronunciation
[edit]Proper noun
[edit]Portugal
- Portugal; a country on the Iberian Peninsula in Southern Europe; capital and largest city: Lisboa.
- Vi reiste gjennom Portugal fra Porto til Lisboa. ― We travelled through Portugal from Porto to Lisbon.
- 2026 June 25, Gunn Aarli, Kjersti Sundland, Sten Lundbo, “Portugal”, in Store norske leksikon[5], archived from the original on 29 September 2026:
- Portugal er et land sør i Europa. Det ligger ved Atlanterhavet, på vestsiden av den iberiske halvøya, og grenser til Spania i nord og øst.
- Portugal is a country in southern Europe. It lies on the Atlantic Ocean, on the western side of the Iberian Peninsula, and borders Spain to the north and east.

Alternative forms
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese Portugal, from Latin Portucale < Portus Cale, former name of what is now the city of Vila Nova de Gaia.
Cognate with Fala and Galician Portugal.
Pronunciation
[edit]
Proper noun
[edit]Portugal m (plural Portugais)
- Portugal (a country in Southern Europe, on the Iberian Peninsula; official name: República Portuguesa; capital and largest city: Lisboa)
Usage notes
[edit]- As opposed to most country names in Portuguese, Portugal is normally used without the definite article, e.g.: de Portugal 'from Portugal', em Portugal 'in Portugal', a Portugal 'to Portugal'. However, it does take a definite article when it has a modifier, as in o Portugal do século XIX '19th-century Portugal'. This peculiarity applies to many other country and place names such as Angola, Moçambique, Cabo Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe, Essuatíni, Macau, Timor-Leste, Andorra, Israel, Aragão, Castela or Leão, as well as to most city names.
