I don't know who wrote the first article or who resubmitted it, but this was rewritten from scratch in my sandbox. Infleqtion is a quantum computing and quantum sensing technology company based in Louisville, Colorado. The company went public on the NYSE in February 2026.
History
[edit]Infleqtion was founded in 2007 as ColdQuanta. The company was spun out of the University of Colorado Boulder (CU-Boulder) by CU-Boulder physics professor Dana Anderson, who as of August 2026 serves as the company's Chief Science Officer.[1][2] The company's technology was based on work Anderson did with Colorado’s Nobel Prize winners Eric Allin Cornell and Carl Wieman to study Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) and atomic particles, particles without electric charge.[2] Anderson described the technology as "(shooting) laser beams at atoms to get them to do useful things".[2]
After optioning the technology, the company received a so-called Proof of Concept investment from the CU Technology Transfer Office, to bring the technology to market.[3] Early applications included UHV processing, systems controls, and diverse glass and silicon bonding, through contracts with the Army, Navy, NASA and the National Science Foundation.[3]
In 2012, the company and university reached a licensing agreement allowing the company to commercialize the BEC physics research.[3]
In 2018, ColdQuanta's commercialized Bose Einstein condensation (BEC) machine was sent to the International Space Station as part of NASA's Cold Atom Laboratory.[4] The research, conducted in part by astronaut Christina Koch, studies BEC particles produced in space, where the particles float in microgravity and move more slowly, making them easier to study.[5]
In 2020, the company, along with University of Wisconsin–Madison professor of physics and Wisconsin Quantum Institute director, Mark Saffman, who also served as the company's chief scientist for quantum information, received a $7.4 million Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) funding grant through the ONISQ program — Optimization with Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum devices.[6] The funding was designed to help researchers study how Qubits could be used to solve complex optimization problems.[6]
In 2022, the company changed its name to Infleqtion, as it transitioned from research and development to commercial deployment of its technology.[4]
In 2024, Matthew Kinsella, an early investor in the company and board member since 2018, joined as CEO.[7][8] Also in 2024, the company released its Oqtant quantum innovation platform, allowing researchers to create, manipulate and study quantum phenomena using BECs.[4]
In September 2025, it was announced that the company was participating in the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) newly formed Quantum & Space Collaboration, with a goal of using quantum technology to further national security, energy/sustainability and economic interests.[4]
The company went public on the NYSE in February 2026.[2] In August 2026, the company opened its new headquarters in Louisville, Colorado, at the Colorado Quantum Innovation Center.[2]
In May 2026, Infleqtion was one of nine quantum companies awarded a combined $2B federal funding for quantum research, under the CHIPS and Science Act.[9]
Technology
[edit]Infleqtion is a quantum computing and quantum sensing company that develops applications using BEC, ultracold matter with no electric charge that has a strong reaction to gravitational and magnetic fields.[3] This reaction makes the material a superior technology versus lasers, for developing high performance gyroscopes, accelerometers, gravimeters and magnetometers. Potential research and commercial applications include atomic clocks, improved navigation of submarines and spacecraft, and quantum computing.[3]
The company studies quantum computing technology using fast switchable lasers to perform both single- and two-qubit operations on static atoms.[10] The company published research detailing how its method of trapping and manipulating neutral-atom qubits using lasers allows better and more efficient high-speed quantum logic operations between neighboring qubits.[10]
The company also develops quantum gravity gradiometry technology, which measures extremely small variations in Earth’s gravitational field to improve mineral surveying techniques.[11]
