Signatures are being gathered for a petition seeking to take a no confidence vote against opposition Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa. 

It has been learned that as of last night, 50 signatures had been received for the petition to be submitted to the party's National Council against Ghafoor, who was elected as interim chair on December 8, 2025, through the votes of 65 National Council members. 

An MDP National Council member said that the petition calls for a council meeting to be held to reach a decision on removing Ghafoor from the post. 

"The policies are such that we can hold a National Council meeting and remove the Chairperson through a simple majority," they explained. 

If the petition is submitted with the signatures of ten National Council members, then the party is required to hold a council meeting. 

The motion to dismiss Ghafoor comes in the wake of dismissal letters being sent to the party's Legal Director Ahmed Mauroof and Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed yesterday, signed by Ghafoor. 

The letters did not specify a reason for the dismissals. 

Following his dismissal, Waheed posted on X alleging that he had been removed from the post against the party's regulations. "Ghafoor has absolutely gone mad," Waheed wrote. 

Internal disputes once again rose in MDP following the leadership's decision to not allow former President Mohamed Nasheed to speak at the party's Local Council Election victory rally.

The leadership's decision led to Nasheed, and several of his supporters refusing to attend the rally.

Ghafoor, however, later said that he had been working on accommodating Nasheed's speech when rumours to the contrary were spread in a manner that would create discord.
