Internal friction has heated up within the opposition MDP after former President Mohamed Nasheed was initially scheduled to speak at a rally currently being held in Malé to celebrate the party's success in the Local Council Elections, only for the agenda to be changed to deny him the opportunity.

According to posts made by some MDP activists on social media, the agenda for the rally currently underway at the Carnival area initially included a speech by Nasheed. However, when the agenda was later revised, it was changed to have the Mayor speak instead.

Amidst this tension, Nasheed stated on his informal X account, "this happy night has become very disheartening."

While some activists are stating on social media that they will not attend tonight's rally out of dissatisfaction with how Nasheed was treated, the seat specifically reserved for him at the rally remains vacant as he did not attend.

Nasheed had left the MDP in 2023 due to dissatisfaction with the party leadership and formed The Democrats. However, he rejoined the MDP last year.

Following his return, he traveled to several cities and islands to campaign for the MDP in the Local Council elections held last Saturday.
