The AZ-104 print shelf has a timing problem, and it changes how you should buy. Microsoft’s current objective list for the Azure Administrator exam is stamped 17 April 2026. The newest print book written against that exam went to press in September 2024. Every serious title you can buy today went to press between 19 and 47 months before the objectives you will actually be tested on, so the useful question is not “which book is best” but “which book lags least, and how do I cover the rest for free”.
Amazon makes that harder than it should be. Searching Amazon for “AZ-104 study guide 2026” on 27 August 2026 returned seven results, four of them from no named publisher and with no edition history, priced at $0.00, $9.99, $30.99 and $35.99. The two carrying a year in the title, one at $0.00 and one stamped 2026-2027 at $30.99, both had no rating at all. Only three results came from a publisher with an Azure track record. We checked every ASIN, price and rating below live on the same day, cross-checked each ISBN against the publisher’s own record, and read every cover to confirm the edition, which turned out to matter more than expected.
The five books worth buying, and what each one is for
Five print titles are current enough to recommend. Prices and ratings are from Amazon on 27 August 2026 and move constantly, so treat them as bands.

How we picked and what we threw out
Every candidate had to clear four gates. It had to exist in print from a publisher that has shipped Azure titles before. Its ASIN had to resolve to the exact edition described here and be buyable on the day of writing, which we confirmed with a live render of each listing rather than trusting a cached price. Its ISBN had to check out against the publisher’s own catalogue record. And its cover had to match the edition in the prose, which is where two of our five nearly went wrong.
The Packt title turned out to be a third edition with a single author, where the second edition had two, and Amazon’s own listing title for it omits the edition number entirely. And the catalogue feed for the cheaper Sybex guide serves a cover from a pre-publication version of the book, a different title credited to a different author, while Wiley’s own image for the same ISBN shows the book that actually shipped. Both cases would have produced a wrong claim in an article that never opened the cover. Titles with a year in the name and no publisher behind them were excluded on sight.
What AZ-104 covers as of April 2026
The Azure Administrator exam is scored out of 1000 with 700 to pass, runs 100 minutes, and the certification expires after 12 months unless you renew it with a free online assessment. Microsoft’s published study guide splits the current objectives into five functional groups:

Here is the part that rescues a 2024 book. Microsoft publishes a change log comparing the April 2026 objectives against the previous version. Every functional group listed in it reads “No change”, and the six rows that did move, the audience profile plus five objectives, are all marked “Minor”. Nothing was added or removed wholesale, which means a book organised around these five groups is still structurally correct.
The lag shows up in the individual bullets instead. Provisioning containers with Azure Container Apps, creating an Azure Backup vault as a thing distinct from a Recovery Services vault, configuring encryption at host for virtual machines, object replication on storage accounts, converting an ARM template to a Bicep file, and Connection monitor in Network Watcher are all in the current list. You can measure the gap instead of guessing at it. Wiley publishes the index of the May 2022 Sybex guide as a PDF, and it carries no entry for Container Apps, Backup vault, encryption at host, object replication or Bicep, while Azure Active Directory appears 8 times and Azure AD around 30 more, the brand Microsoft announced it was renaming to Entra ID in July 2023. Azure Container Apps only reached general availability in May 2022, and Microsoft’s study guide notes that most questions cover generally available features. That is the gap you patch with the portal and the free practice assessment, not with a fourth book.
1. Exam Ref AZ-104 Microsoft Azure Administrator, Second Edition
Charles Pluta’s Exam Ref is the closest thing to an official book, published by Microsoft Press and laid out chapter-per-functional-group, in Microsoft’s own order, though two of the five chapter titles now read a word out of step with the current objective names.
The structure is the reason to buy it. Five chapters map to the five functional groups, and a sixth chapter is dedicated to exam updates, which is an admission by the publisher that the objectives move faster than print does. At 384 pages it is the leanest of the four exam-shaped guides here, against 592 for either Sybex volume and 824 for the Packt third edition, and that is deliberate: an Exam Ref assumes you have done the work and are checking your coverage, not learning Azure from zero.
Skip it if you want to be taught. It ships with no practice questions at all, the practice-test bundle is a separate product, and its 3.8 rating across 22 ratings is the lowest of the three titles here with a rating sample worth reading. Buy it as a coverage checklist alongside something else rather than as your only book. Check the current price on Amazon.
2. Exam Ref AZ-104 Microsoft Azure Administrator Certification and Beyond, Third Edition
Donovan Kelly’s third edition is the newest AZ-104 book in print and, at 824 pages, more than twice the length of the Microsoft Press Exam Ref. On Amazon it undercuts that book by about $12, but Microsoft Press sells its own print edition for $39.99 direct, so the gap narrows or inverts depending on which shelf you buy from.
September 2024 sounds like a small edge over June 2024 until you read the contents. Packt’s own chapter list opens on Managing Microsoft Entra ID Objects, gives Bicep a chapter of its own, and dedicates another to creating and configuring containers, which is exactly where the older books read as dated. This is the book most likely to use current portal blades and current product names, and the “and Beyond” in the title is honest about its approach: it walks you through doing the thing in the portal rather than summarising what the objective says. The cover advertises free online exam-prep tools, flashcards, mock exams and hands-on activities, which are redeemed online rather than printed in the book.
The trade-off is editorial. Packt’s copy editing is inconsistent, one author carries the whole book where the second edition had two, and its 4.4 rating across 62 ratings pools reviews across editions, so some of that praise belongs to a book you are not buying. If you can only buy one AZ-104 title, buy this one and treat the price difference as budget for lab time. Check the current price on Amazon.
3. MCA Azure Administrator Study Guide with Online Labs
This is Rithin Skaria’s Sybex study guide bundled with hosted lab modules, and the labs are the entire reason it exists at more than twice the price of the plain edition.
You get 11 XtremeLabs lab modules, two custom practice exams, 100 electronic flashcards and a searchable key-term glossary. The two entitlements run on different clocks, which matters more than the price: the lab code included with the book buys 6 months of unlimited XtremeLabs access, while the Sybex test bank, flashcards and glossary give a year from activation. For anyone who cannot spin resources up in a real subscription, or who does not want a forgotten VM Scale Set on the credit card at the end of the month, the labs change the economics of studying. The book underneath is a full teaching text, not a checklist.
Skip it if you already have an Azure subscription you can burn a few dollars a day in, because then you are paying a premium for labs you can build yourself, and building them yourself teaches more. Its September 2022 content is also the second-oldest here, so the Entra renaming and the newer compute bullets will read as gaps. Register the lab code only when you are ready to study: 6 months is a real deadline, and buying this the moment you decide to certify can burn the labs you paid the premium for. 4. MCA Microsoft Certified Associate Azure Administrator Study Guide
The plain Sybex guide carries the largest rating sample of the five, 4.5 across 74 ratings, and it is the cheapest way into the Sybex test bank.
Same author and same teaching approach as the labs edition, minus the labs, plus the two practice exams, 100 flashcards and glossary that come with any Sybex study guide. Sybex writes for people who want the concept explained before the click path, and the online test bank is genuinely good at exposing the objectives you have been avoiding.
Two things to know before you click buy. It is the oldest book here, published May 2022, so it predates the Entra ID naming and several current compute and storage bullets. And its catalogue metadata is a mess: several retailers and library databases show a pre-publication title and a different author for this ISBN, and the cover art served by the trade catalogue feed is from that earlier version. Match the cover you see in the listing against the publisher’s own image before ordering, especially if you are buying used. Check the current price on Amazon.
5. Learn Azure Administration, Second Edition
Kamil Mrzygłód’s book is the one on this list that is not shaped like an exam, and that is exactly why it belongs here.
Its five parts organise around cloud administration as a job: an Azure and infrastructure-as-code introduction, then networking, virtual machines, storage, and governance and monitoring, with the reasoning behind the choices rather than the objective list. AZ-104 leans on scenario questions, the ones that ask which of four technically valid options costs least or fails over correctly, and that judgement is what this book builds. It is also the right first purchase for anyone moving from on-premises administration, because it does not assume you already think in subscriptions and resource groups.
Skip it as your only book. At 346 pages nothing in it is mapped to a functional group, so you will finish it without knowing which objectives you are weak on. Pair it with one of the four guides above, or with the Azure certification reading list if you are planning a longer path through several Microsoft exams. Check the current price on Amazon.
What to check before you buy any AZ-104 book
Four checks separate a useful purchase from a $40 paperweight, and all four take about a minute on the listing page.
Publication date against the objective date. Microsoft stamps the objective list with the date it took effect, currently 17 April 2026. Anything published before late 2023 predates the Microsoft Entra ID rename, which Microsoft announced in July 2023 and rolled through its products for the rest of that year, so the identity chapter will use the old names. Anything with a future-sounding year in the title and no publisher behind it is telling you about its marketing, not its content.
A named publisher and a real edition number. Microsoft Press, Sybex and Packt all maintain their books across editions, and an edition number on the cover is a claim you can verify against the publisher’s catalogue. The self-published tier reprints a title with a new year and no revision.
Practice questions, and where they live. Two of these books ship the Sybex test bank and one of those two also bundles hosted labs. The Packt third edition redeems flashcards and mock exams online. The Microsoft Press Exam Ref ships no questions at all, and Learn Azure Administration is not built around them. That is a bigger difference than page count. If your book has no questions, plan on Microsoft’s free practice assessment plus Microsoft’s exam sandbox instead of buying a second book.
The cover and the edition you are actually being shipped. Both surprises in this round of research were edition problems, one a third edition being sold as a second and one a stale cover attached to a live ISBN. Buying used makes this worse. Open the publisher’s product page for the ISBN and compare.
A study path that fills what the books miss
Assume your book is somewhere between 19 and 47 months behind, depending which one you bought, and plan for it. Read the book for structure, then close the gap in the portal with Microsoft’s own material, which is free and current by definition.
Start by opening the study guide page next to your book’s contents page and marking every bullet the book does not cover. On a 2022 title that list is short but real, and the published index tells you most of it: Container Apps, the Azure Backup vault, encryption at host, object replication, ARM to Bicep conversion. Then run Microsoft’s free practice assessment before you finish the book rather than after. It is scored against the current objectives, so it finds the lag for you instead of leaving you to guess where it is.
Build the weak objectives by hand in a subscription and delete them the same day, because the AZ-104 scenario questions reward people who have felt how long a failover takes. The governance domain shares the top weight band with compute and carries the least intuition, so spend real time on policy, locks, tags and budgets, then keep going with Azure cost optimization once the badge is in hand, since cost is the part of the job AZ-104 only samples. If your next step after AZ-104 is infrastructure as code rather than another Microsoft exam, the Terraform and OpenTofu reading list picks up where the Bicep objectives stop, and you can write your first infrastructure as code in an evening. The renewal changes the maths on all of this. Buy the newest one that fits your budget, keep the receipt for lab spend instead of a second title, and let Microsoft’s free material carry the currency the print shelf cannot.
