I’m an existing $200/month ChatGPT Pro subscriber, and I’m disappointed by the DevDay announcement that the $200 Pro tier will have a reduced usage allowance while a new $500 tier is introduced above it.
I use ChatGPT and Codex heavily for professional software-development work. The higher usage allowance was one of the primary reasons I was willing to pay $200/month for Pro.
I have no problem with OpenAI introducing a $500 tier. If that tier provides significantly more compute, faster Astra/Codex performance, or other premium features, that makes sense.
What I object to is reducing the value of the existing $200 plan while keeping the price at $200.
I think existing Pro subscribers should either:
-
Be grandfathered into the usage allowance they subscribed to, or
-
Have the $200 tier retain comparable usage, with the $500 tier adding substantially more capacity and premium features.
I’m not asking OpenAI to give existing subscribers something extra for free. I’m asking them not to substantially reduce what we are already paying for.
I’ve already submitted this feedback to OpenAI Support, but I’m posting it here because I suspect other existing Pro subscribers may have similar concerns.
For heavy Codex users especially, the difference in available compute can materially affect whether the $200 subscription still makes sense.
I hope OpenAI reconsiders how this transition is handled for existing subscribers.

Yes, a proper grandfathering would actually be reasonable. Instead they give us 30 days and a mysterious amount of credits that expire in December. I second your comments. I am not holding my breath.
This is a bait-and-switch, plain and simple.
I’m an existing $200/month Pro subscriber and I just got the email. Here’s what it actually says: starting October 30, the usage included in Pro 200 drops from 20x to 10x Plus, and GPT-6 Pro in Chat gets cut from 200 to 100 messages per week. Same price, half the product. And they dress it up as “our models are getting more efficient,” as if we wouldn’t notice.
Let’s be honest about where things already stood. Even at 20x, my limits were gone in about 3 days of real work. Now I’d be lucky to make it through 1. That’s not a “plan” for professional development work anymore, it’s a demo.
The “thank you” of one-time 62,500 credits expiring December 31 is insulting. A one-off credit that expires in two months does not compensate for permanently halving the thing I’m paying for every month. And the answer to “give us more capacity” being “pay $500 for it” tells you exactly what this is: a price hike disguised as a new tier.
Quietly gutting an existing plan while keeping the price flat is a really cheap move, especially toward the people who paid for the top tier and stuck with you.
I’m not going to complain and stay. I’m moving to Anthropic. Opus 5.5 is simply better, and it doesn’t come with a surprise nerf every time the company decides it needs more margin. When you treat your heaviest paying users like this, don’t be surprised when they leave.
did you even received the 62.500 credits?
Not yet. The email says they’ll show up under Settings > Usage, but it doesn’t give any date for when they’ll be credited, and I don’t see anything there right now. It also says they expire on December 31, so that’s a very short window to use them. Have you received yours?
yeah, the email and the reset for everyone
OpenAI’s servers got crushed by the stampede into the $200 plan @ 20x. They paused new sign-ups so they could properly allocate compute to lower tier subscribers. The moment I saw that notice I knew something was going to change. And this is it. Supply vs. Demand. FWIW, I agree all the orignal $200 Pro subscribers should be grandfathered in, and we are for a short time; even the public alert about “no new $200 subscribers” said so. But as a business I can understand the proposed changes. I got the email too.
Now everyone knows exactly why we need all these new data centers built ASAP. What we’re talking about here on this board (or the implications we all see as devs/business owners) never makes it into the news. It means people are using AI services more than ever, it’s not going to slow down, and AI is never going away. Thankfully, in the USA companies have a choice where to build datacenters and unless there is a federal moratorium companies will simply take their business elsewhere away from the states that do have a moratorium.
In the meantime, this the result: a new $500 tier, and reduced limited on existing $200 subscribers. The fact OpenAI’s servers are/were getting crushed IS A GOOD THING. It means normal people (and companies) are finding normal ways and reasons to use AI.
We all know that cost of HBM has skyrocketed. If you are an investor in one of those supply chain companies that make up AI’s “iron triangle” then congrats; your ROI can more than make up for the leap from $200 to $500. I’m one of those poeple, and thankful to see AI on rise with progress continuing at pace.
The only reason the “important” AI CEOs are commenting in public about slowing down progress or “yes, please help us regulate ourselves Uncle Sam” is nothing more than an excellent strategy by the AI companies to offload their liability. Meanwhile, they will say whatever they need to to keep doing business without gov’t interference the same way Zuck handled it when Facebook was under fire years ago.
We all have a stake in this. Thankfully the truth lives here on this dev board. Not on MSM or social. And thankfully OpenAI fixed the massive bug in the Business tier so workspace members can finally actually collaborate with each other.
*** Btw: 62,500 courtesy credits ($2,500 USD equivalent) to us $200 Pro account holders is a MASSIVE AMOUNT. Just ask Chat itself. The deadline to use these credits is Dec 31 2026. Ask Chat to give you ideas how to use ALL those credits and you absolutely see the value OpenAI is giving us in this context.
I’m on Pro 200 and received the same email. I’d like existing subscribers to keep both the 20x Work/Codex allowance and the 200-message weekly GPT-6 Pro Chat limit.
The credit offer expires on December 31. It may help for a while, but I’d rather keep the recurring allowance I’m paying $200 a month for. Better model efficiency would be welcome; I still want to be able to choose the models and settings that work for me.
If OpenAI won’t keep the current allowances, please give existing users six months or a year at their current limits before the reduction. Publish a clear end date, and show the included limits and credit expiry together on the plan page so we can make an informed renewal decision.

I have to hand it to them. It’s a creative way to say “We’re gonna jack ya’ to the moon!”. And we can do it because we got it and you don’t. Oh, and unless you can burn all 62500 tokens by Oct. 29 you will be required to subscribe to the $500 a month plan in order to use the rest.
Un cambio inconsulto y lamentable que hace a Claude mas atractivo
I’m a Pro 200 power user, and this is extremely disappointing. The 20× Work/Codex allowance is a major reason I pay $200 a month. Cutting it to 10× while keeping the price unchanged halves the included allowance and represents a major deterioration in the plan.
I have no objection to a new $500 tier offering more capacity and premium features. But existing Pro 200 subscribers should retain their 20× allowance. Better models are welcome, but they don’t remove the need for sufficient usage to complete our work. OpenAI should reconsider this reduction for existing subscribers.
Agreed. A one-off credit doesn’t make up for permanently halving the monthly allowance. Keeping existing subscribers at 20× would be a much fairer way to introduce the new tier.

Paying 250% more for an extra 25% usage or paying the same for 50% less usage.
NO THANK YOU.
I’m out
they could’ve made a new sub with 20x for codex and very limited ChatGPT chat usage for devs, instead of slashing everything.

I’m an existing Pro 200 subscriber and use ChatGPT primarily for research, academic writing, archival research, and translation. I have no objection to OpenAI introducing a $500 tier with additional compute or Ultrafast access. What I object to is reducing the recurring value of the $200 plan I already pay for, from 20× to 10×, while keeping the price unchanged.
Existing subscribers should retain the 20× allowance, or at the very least receive a meaningful transition period of six to twelve months. A one-month grace period and temporary credits expiring in December are not an adequate substitute for a permanent reduction in the plan’s included usage.
I understand that serving heavy users has real compute costs, and that OpenAI needs sustainable pricing. My concern is that reducing the allowance of an existing subscription makes it harder for developers to plan their work and justify a recurring commitment.
There is value for both sides in keeping the $200 Pro tier dependable: developers can confidently build their workflows around ChatGPT and Codex, while OpenAI has a stronger basis for retaining committed, paying users.
Please consider preserving the current allowance for existing subscribers. If that is not sustainable, a meaningful transition period and an option with comparable capacity at a comparable price would help balance compute costs with customer trust. A higher-priced tier can serve users who need more, while the existing tier remains a reliable choice.
I’ve subscribed to the US$200 Pro plan continuously since it launched. Please add my voice to the request to preserve existing subscribers’ usage allowances.
I received the transition credits and appreciate them. But credits that expire do not replace the recurring allowance I’ve built my work around.
Introducing a US$500 tier is reasonable. Halving existing subscribers’ included usage while keeping their price unchanged makes the subscription harder to justify.
Please grandfather existing subscribers at their current allowances for as long as they maintain their subscriptions. At minimum, provide a substantially longer transition period and clearly publish each plan’s limits.

After the October 29 rollout, will $200 Personal Pro plans have a defined message cap for GPT-5.6 Sol on xHigh, rather than the very high usage allowance we have today?

I’m an existing Pro subscriber paying $200 a month. Starting October 30, my included Work/Codex allowance drops from 20× to 10×, and my GPT-6 Pro allowance drops from 200 to 100 messages a week. Both allowances are being cut in half. The price stays the same.
I understand that models are improving and becoming more efficient. That’s great, but better models don’t automatically mean half the allowance will get the same work done. That depends on how people actually use them.
The 62,500 transition credits help, and I appreciate them. But they expire December 31. My projects don’t end on December 31.
I’ve already asked Support to preserve the existing allowances or remove the credit expiration, and to forward that feedback to the pricing team. They documented my feedback and confirmed that current policy doesn’t allow an extension. I still haven’t been offered a way to keep my current allowances or received confirmation that the pricing team received my feedback.
I’d like OpenAI to preserve the current allowances for existing subscribers. If that isn’t going to happen, at least remove the December 31 expiration so we can use the transition credits according to our actual project timelines.
