3. Use Biophilic Design Principles in the Home Gym
Biophilic design uses elements that help people feel connected to nature. Because this promotes wellness, it is an apt design approach for a home gym.
The pros at The Old Green Corner mixed industrial style and biophilic principles in this Barcelona basementâs home gym. Leaves on the wall and a false skylight add outdoor elements to the space. Faux tree branch shadows make the skylight illusion convincing. Large mirrors help to reflect the light.

5. Leave a Basement Ceiling Unfinished
This St. Louis basement is fully finished, except for the ceiling. Rather than covering up ductwork, joists, pipes and wires with a dropped ceiling, Detailed Designs By Denise left it open. This allowed for a higher ceiling, and leaving everything exposed gives the space industrial loft style.

6. Let Resorts Inspire Home Gym Style
Industrial style was popular, but it was not the only look that Houzz users admired. They were equally drawn to home gyms that looked like high-end resort workout rooms.

Interior designer Sarah Carr has a background in resort design, and she applied that experience to this Denver home gym. This airy space is located in a high-ceiling loft over the garage. The large window provides a tree canopy view for anyone using the elliptical or rowing machines, using free weights, practicing yoga or taking a class via the well-placed TV screen.
7. Move the Gym to the Main or Upper Level
Home gyms are typically located in basements or garages. But because many homeowners are prioritizing health and wellness at home, it makes sense that more home gyms are appearing in the main part of the home. This is a good option for empty nesters who find themselves with an extra bedroom their child no longer uses.
This gym by Seaside Custom Builders in Naples, Florida, has sliding glass doors that allow those passing by in the hallway to enjoy the lush view out the gymâs large windows. And for those worried about resale values, note that the overall design of the space is versatile. It would be easy to transform it into a home office or lounge.

8. Incorporate a Smart TV Screen
Sheltering in place has made screens increasingly important in home gyms. They make it possible for homeowners to stream workouts, attend virtual classes and work out with a personal trainer remotely. The pros at William Guidero Planning and Design placed a screen in a spot where the homeowners can follow along while enjoying a resort-like Southern California view.

This amazing design transformed a one-car garage in New York into a climberâs paradise. The pros at Smart Playrooms took advantage of every inch of wall, floor and ceiling space. In addition to climbing and swinging, thereâs also space for boxing and practicing yoga. Note the handy racks for storing equipment like racquets, lacrosse sticks, balls and skateboards.
