The Fish in Jonah's Puddle (To Say Nothing of the Demon) (Worlds Beyond)
Purchase options and add-ons
The demon ate their parents. They intend to get them back.
Jonah Hutchins didn't think twice about finding a salmon in a puddle in his backyard. He already had a dapper troll lurking in his basement and a snarky harpy roosting in the trees out front, after all. He didn't even flinch when the fish named Stuart announced that several nearby puddles were portals to other dimensions.
However, a demon also lurked in Stuart's puddle—and it swallowed Jonah's parents whole.
Jonah and his sister Debbie refuse to let the demon make them orphans. So they gather Jonah's strange friends and plunge through the puddles into the worlds beyond on a wild rescue mission.
They discover wondrous places like a cardboard kingdom where spilled water could end everything and a crumbling world full of ghosts and mouths. They meet weird new allies, including a massive plastic dragon and an octopus-headed prophetess. But the demon is still hungry, and it won't stop until it devours them all.
This book combines the awestruck adventure of Impossible Creatures with the dark, hungry dread of Coraline. It is a celebration of the imagination's power and a wild ride you won't soon forget.

Edge Bleed Design
This hardcover of The Fish in Jonah's Puddle features a striking edge-bleed design. This technique creates an effect similar to sprayed edges, except that each page features a bit of the design printed directly on it for a truly unique look.
Meet Humphrey the Troll
The monstrous beast unfolded from the shadows, its mottled green, brown, and black flesh wrapped in jagged scales. Its yellowed tusks jutted out on either side of its bottom lip, the cracked tips almost reaching the folds of its lower eyelids. Its virulent green eyes, their orange pupils as sharp as a cat’s, pierced the gloom like tiny twin knives.
The monster’s thick, meaty hand reached toward Jonah, the vicious, sawtooth nails on its fingers raking the air. Then, having found Jonah’s head, it ruffled his hair. “I started thinking you weren’t coming tonight,” Humphrey said, his voice deep as a well and gravelly as a pit.
Meet Calisto the Harpy
Jonah turned right out of his driveway and wandered down the street. He kicked fallen sticks and stomped through mud puddles. The tall evergreens swayed and whistled around him as the wind whipped their branches into a frenzy. The breeze wasn’t the only thing causing the activity, though.
“Hi, Calisto,” Jonah said as the harpy landed on his neighbor’s lawn off to his right.
“Good day, Jonah,” Calisto replied, her broad, muscular wings flexing as her talons dug into the grass and soil. Her beautiful face, framed by long black hair, smiled to reveal glittering, jagged rows of teeth. “Where are you heading this fine afternoon? Fishing? Exploring? Taking care of the local bully problem?”
“Oh, Stuart!” a voice cried. “You’ve returned! And you brought company!”
The entire group pivoted toward the voice. Calisto and Jonah cocked their heads. Debbie gasped. “That… is not what I was expecting,” Calisto mused.
Ms. Finch was just under six feet tall. She was wearing a yellow floral apron over a white sundress. Her skin was a lovely purplish-brownish gray, and her head was an octopus.
Meet Dave the Survivor
“Good day, fine folk,” a gravelly voice said. “Where might you be off to in this here dark world?”
Jonah looked over and cringed. The creature who addressed them was partway between a crab, a squid, and a man, with some definite hints of barnacle. Black ooze dripped off his shell, mixing into the water below with a plop.
The creature half-shuffled, half-slithered toward them on its strange mix of legs and tentacles. “Allow me to introduce myself. I am Lord Davros von München-Bellyweather the Fourth. You may call me Dave.”

Stuart was having a lovely cup of tea with Ms. Finch when reality ripped itself apart.
Ms. Finch gasped as Stuart lifted into the air, his straw slipping from his mouth. Then, before he could say so much as a “Goodbye, Ms. Finch,” the dimensional rift slurped Stuart up and set him sliding through the channels between the worlds.
Stuart rocketed through one raging current after another, passing frantic beings whose homes had just become debris in a cosmic typhoon. A family of creatures with three legs, three fins, and three eyes spiraled past him, and Stuart jerked upward to avoid crashing into their swarm of children. Then another eddy snatched him up, and he found his path crossing that of a giant rainbow ray.
Stuart skidded past underneath the ray and caught sight of something else in the distance. He saw a dark force lash out at the currents, sending another shock wave rippling through the space between the worlds. A chill shivered through Stuart’s body as he felt that power crash into him. This storm was not a natural event. Something had caused it.
This madcap story is as funny and heartwarming as scary and jaw-dropping. It’s a celebration of the weird kids, the outcasts, and creativity. If you enjoy A Wrinkle in Time, The Girl Who Drank the Moon, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Gravity Falls, Studio Ghibli films, or found-family stories, this portal fantasy’s for you. It’s also for lovers of slimy sea monsters, ghastly oddities, and quirky humor. It is whimsical, offbeat, and a nonstop thrill ride you won’t soon forget.
Editorial Reviews
Review
"Dive into a world of whimsy, hilarity, and danger, with talking fish and demons—but be ready to never know what might come next! Perhaps what stood out to me most was how the demon swallowing Jonah's parents whole reminded me of the rhinoceros that took away James' parents in James and the Giant Peach. But where that opening scarred me for years, The Fish in Jonah's Puddle did something to heal it up. It's a delightfully fun and suspenseful read, and it'd be perfect to take to the beach this summer; who KNOWS what could be in THAT big puddle!"—Reedsy Discovery
"The prose shifts effortlessly between eloquent and delightfully silly, doubling down on the make-believe aesthetic Leavitt has crafted. A tale that channels the madcap sparkle of Lewis Carroll and the sturdy spiritual heft of C. S. Lewis, The Fish in Jonah's Puddle (To Say Nothing of the Demon) is both wonderfully whimsical and gently profound."—Indies Today (Recommended)
