Sex Talks with Tweens: What to Say & How to Say It
Purchase options and add-ons
If parents don't talk with their tweens, pornography, peers and social media will do it for them. These are the last (and worst) places kids for kids to get their sex education.
Most people don't know how to start or what to say when it comes to the sex talks. No more wondering how much is too much information, parents will find essential, age-appropriate scripts on topics such as:
Consent
Gender
Pleasure
Puberty
Relationships
LGBTQ issues
Pornography
Their own sexuality
And more (a lot more)
Today's parents finally have what they've been waiting for―a modern and often humorous guide to talking with tweens about sexuality. This book takes the fear out of the sex talks and empowers parents to tackle this vital part of raising children.
Acclaimed sexuality and parent educator, Amy Lang, MA, has included simple tips used by thousands of parents that will make the conversations easier, effective and even fun.
They need you. Give your tween the gift of fact-based, positive and healthy sexuality education. They may hate it in the moment but they will thank you in the long run.
"There has been a serious dearth of advice on how to talk to tweens about sex. Amy Lang to the rescue! Her straightforward (and often funny) book gives parents the tools to build trust with their children as well as raise them to approach sexuality consciously, positively and responsibly. ―Peggy Orenstein, author of Girls & Sex and Boys & Sex
"I am constantly asked by parents, "What words do I use when talking to my kids?" I have collected hundreds of sex education books over the years and this excellent book stands out! It is simpler to use than most and it covers a broad range of topics. More than ever, we need to be approachable and 'askable' parents who empower our kids. This book will help you do just that!" ―Rowena Thomas, founder of 'Amazing Me' is a Sexual Health Educator based in Sydney, Australia.
"Amy Lang makes even the most blush-worthy topics totally approachable. You'll get plenty of tips to help you help your child be prepared to stay safe, healthy, and responsible. You can DO this―equipped with this book!" ―Amy McReady, Parenting Coach and author of The Me, Me, Me Epidemic: A Step-By-Step Guide to Raising Capable, Grateful Kids in an Over-Entitled World
"Amy Lang offers honest, open talking points that educate parents (and their kids) with a fun yet concise voice. If this book goes missing, look under your child's pillow!" ―Kim Cook, RN CHES, Author, Teen World Confidential: Five-Minute Topics to Open Conversation; Founder, The Sex Education Alliance

About the author

When Amy Lang, MA became a parent she assumed she would be amazing at the sex talks because she had been a sexual health educator for over 16 years. She was not. At all. Surprised by her discomfort (and embarrassment) she began to seek out the best ways to talk with kids about this important part of life.
While she was doing her research she realized she could combine her love of sexual health and master's degree in adult education and help other parents tackle this important part of parenting. In 2006 she started her company Birds & Bees & Kids.
With her lively, engaging and down-to-earth style she helps parents become their kid’s go-to birds and bees source. Amy’s books, Birds & Bees Solutions Center and podcast - Just Say This - show parents talking about sexuality can be something to look forward to and tons easier than most people think.
She also provides childhood sexual development and sexual abuse prevention training for early childhood and youth serving organizations, such as the US Air Force Youth and Family services and Boys & Girls clubs. Amy is still married to her first husband and they are getting the hang of parenting their recently launched man-child. A Great and Important Book - Thank you, Amy!
Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2022What I love about this book is it gives parents a starting point for how to discuss difficult topics. It includes scripts that you can adapt and make your own so you can be both straightforward and responsible in educating your kids about sex. Considering I'm still waiting for a sex talk from my parents (I'm in my 40s) this DEFINITELY helps you frame conversations and open the lines of communication. A must-have for any parent with tweens.

I’ve read a lot of sex education books, and this is the best one.
Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2025As a family Therapist, this is by far my favorite go to source. I recommend her website and specifically this book probably once a week to parents. What I love is her straightforward scripts that leave room for parents to insert their own values. She gives a paired down version of what is developmentally appropriate information for a child to know about any given topic and then allows parents to talk about their personal values around it. There’s so much information that children need to get from their parents first, and not from any other source, and this is a great resource for parents who want to beat the Internet to their child’s sex education.
