  • Dongfeng to trial-produce humanoid robots by end-2026 – Xiaodong to work in car plants, human-level by 2027

Dongfeng is joining the robot race. The Chinese carmaker says its humanoid robot, called Xiaodong, will enter its factories in October to handle sorting and quality inspection tasks, ahead of small-batch trial production by the end of 2026, CnEVPost reports.

The company is setting itself an aggressive development target after that. “We aim to bring its working capabilities on par with those of human workers by the end of next year,” said Zhang Zhenlin, Dongfeng’s chief engineer of intelligent technology.

Xiaodong made its public debut at the World Robot Conference in August. It’s aimed squarely at material sorting in automotive manufacturing for a start, with Dongfeng saying development is moving from single repetitive actions towards fully autonomous execution of flexible operations – in plain terms, from doing one rehearsed task on repeat to figuring out varied jobs on its own.

There’s a second machine in the programme, too – a quadruped robot dog called Yuanzai, with autonomous navigation, multimodal perception and intelligent interaction, pitched at campus patrol and smart services. Dongfeng says it will reach commercial use sooner than the humanoid, with its first deployment being customer guidance at dealerships – so a Dongfeng showroom visit in China may soon begin with a robot dog showing you to the car.

The logic behind carmakers building robots is consistent across the industry: the supply chains, manufacturing discipline and AI stacks developed for cars – particularly for autonomous driving – transfer readily to embodied robotics, and Dongfeng says it intends to commercialise such products across multiple sectors.

It has plenty of company. Xpeng’s Iron humanoid already has a production line running, with mass production targeted by the end of this year; Chery-backed Aimoga Robotics has delivered over 3,000 robots globally and is preparing for an IPO; and Li Auto, Seres and Leapmotor have all announced embodied-intelligence plans of their own. Tesla has long promised its Optimus, and BMW put Figure’s humanoid to work at its Spartanburg plant back in 2024.

For Dongfeng, the robots are the latest expression of a wider push to be taken seriously as a technology player – the state-owned giant is also chasing solid-state batteries for its EVs.

Malaysians, meanwhile, know the brand through the 007 EV sedan and Vigo EV SUV sold through Dongfeng by Carro in PJ Midtown – no robot dogs in the showroom here just yet.

  • Dongfeng Voyah Passion S, Courage electric SUVs considered for Malaysian market alongside Dream 9 MPV

Dongfeng Voyah Passion S, Courage electric SUVs considered for Malaysian market alongside Dream 9 MPV

    Voyah Passion S

With the Voyah brand set for its entry into the Malaysian market with the Dream 9 flagship MPV that recently made its debut, the Dongfeng brand is considering additions to its line-up for Malaysia, distributor Volt Auto Malaysia has revealed.

The Voyah line-up in China is currently comprised of the Passion S, Taishan, Free and the Courage; of these, Volt Auto is considering the Passion S and the Courage for entry into Malaysia.

Having had its China market launch in August, the Passion S is sold in three variants at prices ranging from 229,900 yuan (RM139,556) to 279,900 yuan (RM169,908). In terms of exterior dimensions, the Passion S measures 5,050 mm long, 1,998 mm wide and 1,656 mm tall with a 3,000 mm wheelbase.

There are single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrains offered with the Passion S; the former starts the range with a 300 kW (408 PS) RWD drivetrain, while the rang-topping variant adds a 175 kW (238 PS) front motor, combining for a total output of 646 PS and 765 Nm. This enables the top variant of the Passion S to do the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.5 seconds.

Two battery capacities are offered for the Passion S, and these are an 81.6 kWh battery and a 98.1 kWh battery, respectively offering a CLTC range of 630 km and 740 km (equating to around 517 km and 607 km on the WLTP standard). Its 800-volt electrical architecture supports “5C” charging, enabling a 20-80% recharge in a claimed 10 minutes.

For chassis, the Passion S features a double wishbone front and five-link rear suspension layout, and the top variant gets air springs and adaptive damping.

The ADAS suite in the Passion S is the Huawei Qiankun ADS 5 driving assistance system that includes four lidar units, one 896-line lidar unit and three solid-state lidar units, and thus of a similar specification to that of the recently-launched Dream 9 MPV.

Inside, infotainment in the Passion S is powered by the Huawei HarmonySpace 5.2 operating system, accessed through a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, an 8.8-inch driver’s instrument display and a 29-inch augmented reality head-up display. Higher variants of the Passion S also get a 27-speaker audio system, and 6.6 litre refrigerator.

Dongfeng Voyah Passion S, Courage electric SUVs considered for Malaysian market alongside Dream 9 MPV

    Voyah Courage

While the aforementioned Voyah Passion S is decided sporty and relatively svelte, and therefore aimed at the similarly-priced Xiaomi YU7, the Voyah Courage is a more conventionally styled SUV.

The Courage is on sale in China in three variants; a base RWD, an AWD and a long-range AWD, priced at 202,900 yuan (RM123,166), 222,900 yuan (RM135,307) and 242,900 yuan (RM147,447) respectively.

Slightly more compact than the Passion S, the Courage measures 4,810 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,636 mm tall with a 2,925 mm wheelbase. Also built on an 800-volt electrical architecture, the base RWD version of the Courage offers a single-motor powertrain producing 230 kW (313 PS). The dual-motor AWD version adds a 175 kW (238 PS) front axle motor.

All variants of the Courage support “5C” charging; the base RWD version is rated for a maximum range of 650 km on the CLTC cycle, or around 533 km (WLTP). The long-range AWD version gets a 112 kWh battery pack that offers this variant up to 901 km of CLTC range, or around 739 km WLTP.

Advanced driving assistance systems in the Courage are of the Huawei Qiankun ADS 4 system, while infotainment is powered by the HarmonySpace 5 operating system. Related hardware is a 192-line lidar unit, along with 29 sensors.

Inside, the cabin of the Voyah Courage features 35 storage compartments, according to Car News China, including a 72 litre compartment and a seven-litre refrigerator. Also included are wireless phone charging, rear tray tables, and Oeko-Tex skin-friendly upholstery.

As revealed previously, the Voyah brand will have its own dealer network in Malaysia, with standalone showrooms distinct from the Dongfeng brand. While there has yet to be official confirmation of the Passion S and the Courage SUVs for the Malaysian market, these are under consideration alongside the Dream 9 MPV that has been confirmed for Malaysia.

  • Mercedes-Benz GLC EV to be assembled in Thailand – GLC300 expected to go for under RM452k when it debuts

Mercedes-Benz GLC EV to be assembled in Thailand – GLC300 expected to go for under RM452k when it debuts

Mercedes-Benz Thailand has announced plans to manufacture the Mercedes-Benz GLC electric in Thailand, using domestically sourced components to strengthen the country’s auto supply chain and bolster its electric vehicle (EV) production, the Bangkok Post reports.

According to Mercedes-Benz Thailand president and CEO Christian Schell, the company expects strong demand for the electric SUV, which is the first model developed on the manufacturer’s MB.EA-Medium version of the Mercedes-Benz Electric Architecture.

With local assembly, the company reaffirmed its commitment to investment in Thailand, which Schell said remains a key growth market in the region. The announcement comes as the Thai government prepares a new EV excise tax structure designed to encourage automakers to invest in local EV production and increase the use of locally made parts, reducing reliance on imported vehicles.

He said the first deliveries of the GLC electric to customers in the Kingdom are expected to happen sometime between the first and second quarters of next year. The vehicle, which will make its official debut at the 2026 Thailand International Motor Expo at the end of this year, is expected to carry a starting price of less than 3.7 million baht (RM451,800).

While the flagship GLC 400 4Matic was the debut version for the global reveal of the EV back in August, the variant that will be made and sold in Thailand will be the GLC 300, as indicated by the mention of the 85 kWh battery for it (the GLC 400 is equipped with a 94 kWh unit). It will utilise a locally-produced battery, following the same approach as that taken for the electric CLA in the country.

The GLC 300 4Matic will also be heading our way, as highlighted during the preview of it in Singapore earlier this month. It will be offered in two variants for Malaysia, with pricing estimated at RM389,000 for the Avantgarde and RM399,000 for the AMG Line Plus.

The electric SUV will also go the CKD route in Malaysia, but will arrive first as a CBU full import, with local assembly in Pekan, Pahang happening later – MBM has said that there are no plans for export to the region.

Key numbers for the GLC 300 electric, as mentioned during the presentation in Singapore, include a power output of 421 PS (310 kW) and 800 Nm. Driving all four wheels, it does the 0-100 km/h run in 4.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 210 km/h.

The 85 kWh NMC battery delivers a range of up to 616 km on the WLTP cycle (597 km with the Avantgarde’s equipment, 584 km for the AMG Line). Built on an 800-volt architecture, the SUV can support up to 320 kW of DC fast charging, enabling it to be charged from 10 to 80% in 22 minutes.

  • Pos Malaysia now operates 1,585 EVs, one in three parcels delivered via electric vehicles

Pos Malaysia now operates 1,585 EVs, one in three parcels delivered via electric vehicles

Pos Malaysia now operates 1,585 electric vehicles (EVs) nationwide, with the fleet having travelled 28.8 million km since 2023. The company says one in three parcels is now delivered using an EV.

The fleet comprises 1,253 electric motorcycles and 332 electric vans, operating across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. Pos Malaysia describes it as Malaysia’s largest electric logistics fleet.

The 28.8 million km travelled is equivalent to around 719 trips around the world, while fleet electrification has helped off-set approximately 3,881 tonnes of CO₂e emissions since 2023. More than 2,200 of Pos Malaysia’s vehicles are also equipped with telematics, providing data for route optimisation, driver safety, fleet utilisation and efficiency.

  • Audi A6 Sportback e-tron sets Guinness World Record for longest journey by an EV on one charge – 1,338 km

Audi A6 Sportback e-tron sets Guinness World Record for longest journey by an EV on one charge – 1,338 km

The Audi A6 e-tron has dethroned the Lucid Air Grand Touring to become the new electric vehicle (EV) range king. With rally driver Miko Marczyk behind the wheel, an A6 Sportback e-tron covered 1,338 km to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest journey by an electric car on a single charge.

That figure beats the previous record of 1,205 km set by an Air Grand Touring in July last year. According to Audi, the A6 Sportback e-tron performance with its 100-kWh battery pack (gross; 94.9 kWh net) has a WLTP-rated range of up 777 km, so the record figure exceeds this about 72.2%. The final energy consumption figure at the end of the attempt was 7.09 kWh per 100 km, which is less than half the official combined consumption figure.

Marczyk’s attempt took place in Poland on September 11 and saw him travel along the Vistula, via Krakow, Sandomierz, Warsaw, Torun, and Grudziadz to Hel on the Baltic Sea and back along the same route.

Audi A6 Sportback e-tron sets Guinness World Record for longest journey by an EV on one charge – 1,338 km

The reigning European Rally champion didn’t enjoy clear roads on his journey and had to deal with regular traffic, including stretches during rush hour. Low temperatures are also detrimental to an EV’s range, and the car had to cope with an average temperature of 15 degrees Celsius (the lowest encountered was seven degrees Celsius).

Helping him on his quest is the fact that the A6 Sportback e-tron boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.21 and its regenerative braking can provide up to 220 kW. Of course, the car can’t do everything and it takes a driver’s experience in hypermiling to achieve a record like this. Marczyk’s motorsport involvement helped and he also has prior hypermiling experience having driven 2,831 km on a single tank in a diesel-powered Skoda Superb in March last year to set a Guinness World Record.

  • 2027 Proton S70 MC2 turbo facelift spied yet again – sportier face; top-spec red brake callipers, new wheels

2027 Proton S70 MC2 turbo facelift spied yet again – sportier face; top-spec red brake callipers, new wheels

The facelifted Proton S70 MC2 turbo continues to pound the road ahead of its launch, and this time it’s the turn of our BM colleague – and Tanjong Malim resident – Farid Awaludin to snap photos of the test prototype.

While we’ve already seen the rear plenty of times, this is the first time we’re getting such a good look at the front end, which is where the bulk of the changes are expected to be found. As we’ve mentioned before, this appears to be an in-house-designed facelift, as the fourth-generation Geely Emgrand on which the S70 is based was only given a minor update in 2024 – this was already applied to the MC1 model earlier this year.

From what we can see, the car will receive a new grille, which looks to feature a thick centre slat emanating from the Proton roundel. This is a departure from what we’ve seen from recent models, which feature either a slimmer Ethereal Bow bar (X50) or an open grille with raised pins (Saga, X70, X90, pre-facelift S70), and it reminds this writer of the eighth-gen Honda Accord’s Modulo grille. However, it could just be a red herring caused by the disguise.

The bumper has also been redesigned with larger (still fake) corner air inlets, in a similar arrangement to those on the also-facelifted X70, giving the car a sportier look. The LED headlights seem to be smoked, but that could also be due to the camo blocking out light; in any case, they are the same headlights found on the MC1, meaning that the indicators are bulbs instead of LEDs (boo).

2027 Proton S70 MC2 turbo facelift spied yet again – sportier face; top-spec red brake callipers, new wheels

Moving further back, the wheels are of a new, completely different design compared to the mule we spotted earlier this week (which itself looks to have reverted to the pre-MC Flagship’s rollers). This, together with the red brake callipers, rather suggests that we’re looking at a sportier-looking Flagship variant – without the Flagship X’s sunroof and bodykit, of course.

Curiously, it appears that the car does not have the X50-style quad tailpipes that we’ve seen on and off thus far. However, the new taillights have also been completely taped up, so they may simply be obscured by the bumper camo.

Elsewhere, the car’s heavy tinting suggests that it hides an all-new, in-house-designed interior, just like the X50’s. If it does, you can expect a larger touchscreen and increased centre console storage. The front passenger is also set to benefit from a keyless entry button on the external door handle, joining the driver’s side.

2027 Proton S70 MC2 turbo facelift spied yet again – sportier face; top-spec red brake callipers, new wheels

The facelifted S70 turbo will continue to utilise the 1.5 litre BHE15-EFZ i-GT turbo direct-injected four-cylinder engine that was only just added with the MC1. It produces 181 PS at 5,500 rpm and 290 Nm of torque between 2,000 and 3,500 rpm, all sent to the front wheels through the usual seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.

Safety-wise, the turbo models will be the only ones to feature advanced driver assists such as autonomous emergency braking and Level 2 semi-autonomous driving functionality. It remains to be seen if this will be extended to the Premium variant like the X50 or continue to be reserved for the top-spec Flagship and Flagship X.

The turbo model will join the newly-launched naturally-aspirated variant in a revamped MC2 lineup, although only the forced-induction cars will sport the new look. Could we see a launch late this year?

  • Bentley drops electrification timeline; to take a more flexible approach, shorten product development times

Bentley drops electrification timeline; to take a more flexible approach, shorten product development times

    Bentley Torcal

Bentley has now taken a more flexible strategy towards electrification instead of its previous plan to have its product range become fully electric by 2030, Autocar has reported.

The British luxury marque announced in 2020 that it would move towards full electrification and switch its product line to battery-electric propulsion by 2030, and at the time it aimed to launch its first fully electric model by 2025.

Having officially unveiled its first production battery-electric model, the Torcal yesterday, Bentley’s first BEV is a year behind its original schedule as the British marque wound back its electrification plans.

Bentley’s previously outlined strategy was no longer compatible with how the market has evolved through the 2020s, CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser told Autocar.

Bentley drops electrification timeline; to take a more flexible approach, shorten product development times

The next EV from Bentley is due to emerge only after 2030, and the British luxury marque now does not expect to launch another model based on the Torcal’s PPE arhictecture that also underpins the Porsche Cayenne Electric.

“With all the planning and things changing – and I’m sure regulators have new ideas every week – my answer is maybe not what you expect: we will bring in more flexibility in our strategies. We have to react a little bit more, not just say: ‘this is the plan’.

“In the past, you made a plan for 10 years and then you just went with it. We delivered the cars in a relatively stable environment. It’s not the case any more,” Walliser said.

Bentley drops electrification timeline; to take a more flexible approach, shorten product development times

“So we need way more flexibility: shortening the cycle times, shortening the development times. This predictable planning is honestly gone, and I don’t think it will come back,” he continued.

In this push for flexibility, Bentley has reduced development times for new models to 48 months, and the marque aims to further quicken development times to 36 months, to match group brand Volkswagen, Walliser continued.

A line-up of products featuring multiple powertrain types is key to that flexibility of planning, though there is no scope to introduce a hybrid powertrain version of the Torcal, said the brand’s CEO. This is partly due to its platform, which is EV-specific, and also because a hybrid Torcal would overlap with the Bentayga, “and I really would like to have product identity,” Walliser said.

  • GWM Wey G9 – PHEV tech makes a lot of sense for MPVs

GWM Wey G9 – PHEV tech makes a lot of sense for MPVs

Launched in January this year, the GWM Wey G9 is a seven-seat MPV with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain that is locally assembled (CKD) in Melaka. Priced at RM269,800 on-the-road without insurance, the Wey G9 is offered in a sole variant and is a viable alternative to other MPVs, electrified or otherwise, as we highlighted previously.

Here we bring you a comprehensive gallery of the Wey G9 in Nebula Black, one of three colours available, with the others being Aurora White and Wisdom Grey. Nebula Black is paired with a black interior, although you can get also get a brown interior, both with a grey headliner.

At 5,050 mm long, 1,985 mm wide, 1,900 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 3,085 mm, the GWM MPV is slightly larger than both the Toyota Vellfire and Alphard. Styling-wise, the large front grille with vertical chrome bars makes for an imposing face, and you’ll find plenty of other chrome embellishments throughout the exterior.

The PHEV system, dubbed Hi4 Intelligent Hybrid 4WD, is based around a 1.5 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine making 150 PS (148 hp or 110 kW) and 240 Nm of torque. This is augmented by two electric motors: one at the front rated at 109 PS (107 hp or 80 kW) and 170 Nm, and another at the rear with 184 PS (181 hp or 135 kW) and 232 Nm.

GWM Wey G9 – PHEV tech makes a lot of sense for MPVs

Together, the total system output is 442 PS (436 hp or 325 kW) and 642 Nm, which is enough to get this 2.8-tonne MPV from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 150 km/h. There’s also a four-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), which is good for extra efficiency and refinement on highways.

The electric motors are hooked up to a 44.2-kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery pack, which enables an electric-only driving range of up to 170 km following the NEDC standard (around 145 km WLTP). With a 58-litre fuel tank, the combined hybrid range is up to 1,000 km NEDC (850 km WLTP).

For charging, the battery pack can handle a maximum DC input of 60 kW to get from a 30-80% state of charge (SoC) in 26 minutes, while AC charging at a peak of 6.6 kW sees a 15-100% be achieved in 6.5 hours.

As with most PHEVs, there are several system modes to choose from, including EV (battery power only), EV Priority (priority is to use battery power as much as possible) and Intelligent HEV (the system alternates between battery power and the engine). These go on top of the Eco, Normal, Sport, Snow and AWD drive modes.

A PHEV powertrain makes sense for an MPV because it offers flexibility depending on the situation. Should you be waiting for your kid to finish school, you can put the car in EV-only mode to save on fuel and not output exhaust gases.

Daily commutes within the Wey G9’s electric-only range also result in fewer trips to a petrol station, but should the need come to go further, the petrol engine allows for long-distance journeys on a whim without needing to spend time finding and waiting at a charging station to make sure you have sufficient range.

As standard, the Wey G9 is fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels (245/50R18 tyres), LED headlamps with auto high beam, LED daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers, dual sunroofs, power-sliding rear doors and a powered tailgate with a kick sensor. Acoustic glass is also used for the windshield as well as windows on the front and second-row doors.

Inside, you’ll find a dual-tier dashboard that is home to a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The latter sits just above a row of buttons for quick access to certain vehicle functions and supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Also equipped is a head-up display, a 50-watt wireless Qi charger and a 21-speaker sound system, the last of which works with an active noise cancellation system.

The seats are arranged in 2-2-3 layout, with the first two rows being upholstered in Nappa leather while it is leatherette for the third row. The front seats are power adjustable and feature memory, ventilation and massage functions, with the front passenger seat also having a “boss switch.”

Meanwhile, the second row gets two individual zero-gravity seats that get the same functions as those in front, with the addition of a powered headrest and a two-way electric leg rest. It’s less fancy in the third row that gets manually-operated seats that can be tipped up in a 60:40 split. For parents, there are ISOFIX child seat anchors for the second and third row as well as built-in sunshades.

Other items in the kit list include three-zone climate control with an air quality control system and CN95 filter, 64-colour ambient lighting, a powered steering column, vehicle telematics and a 12.5-litre refrigerator aft of the front centre console.

Safety-wise, the Wey G9 comes equipped with six airbags (including full-length curtain units – measuring more than three metres long – across all three rows), a 360-degree camera and a full complement of driver assistance kit, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring with collision prevention, rear cross traffic alert with auto brake and a door opening warning.

Each purchase comes with a six-year/unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty and an eight-year/180,000-km hybrid system warranty that covers the battery pack, electric motors and control unit. Also included are five years of free connected services data for telematics, five years of free maintenance (including parts and labour) and a complimentary home wallbox charger.

  • Geely Emgrand L EM-i in Australia 1H 2027 – 80 km WLTP EV, 1,000 km total; in Malaysia as Proton eMas 8 PHEV?

Geely Emgrand L EM-i in Australia 1H 2027 – 80 km WLTP EV, 1,000 km total; in Malaysia as Proton eMas 8 PHEV?

Geely has confirmed that the Galaxy Starshine 6 will go on sale in Australia in the first half of 2027 as the Emgrand L EM-i. The plug-in sedan will form a three-pronged assault on Down Under alongside the Monjaro EM-i and the massive and powerful Battleship 700.

The car is, of course, based on the fifth-generation Emgrand, so the badging is no big surprise. The “L” suffix, however, has only recently been added to differentiate it from the fourth-gen model that remains on sale in many markets – some of them built by Proton.

For Australia, the Emgrand L EM-i looks set to be beefed up under the bonnet, with Geely promising over 245 PS and 250 Nm of torque combined. This suggests that it will utilise the more powerful electric motor reserved for the flex-fuel range-topper in China, boosted by 27 PS and 30 Nm over the standard model to 190 PS and 240 Nm.

Geely Emgrand L EM-i in Australia 1H 2027 – 80 km WLTP EV, 1,000 km total; in Malaysia as Proton eMas 8 PHEV?

The motor will almost certainly be paired with the ubiquitous 99 PS/125 Nm 1.5 litre BHE15-BFN naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine already used in the likes of the Proton eMas 7 PHEV, as well as an 11-in-1 single-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). With the largest available 17 kWh LFP battery, Geely is promising a WLTP-rated EV range of over 80 km and a total range of over 1,000 km.

As for charging, the Chinese-market Starshine 6 supports up to 30 kW of DC fast charging and we expect this to be carried over to global markets, enabling a 30 to 80% top up in 20 minutes. It also accepts up to 3.3 kW of AC charging and offers a 3 kW V2L function.

Compared to the fourth-gen Emgrand (i.e. the Proton S70), the Emgrand L EM-i is a much bigger car. Measuring 4,806 mm long, 1,886 mm wide and 1,490 mm tall, it’s 204 mm longer, 77 mm wider and 24 mm taller, while its 2,756 mm wheelbase is 129 mm longer. Unfortunately, it still uses torsion beam rear suspension, so people will still have a hard time seeing this as a proper C- or D-segment sedan.

Geely Emgrand L EM-i in Australia 1H 2027 – 80 km WLTP EV, 1,000 km total; in Malaysia as Proton eMas 8 PHEV?

Available features include a 10.2-inch instrument display, a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 50-watt Qi wireless charger, the usual Geely Galaxy multifunction control knob and “marshmallow” power-adjustable front seats with “ripple” quilting and ventilation. Geely also promises a large 609 litre boot, no doubt helped by the space-saving rear suspension.

With the Emgrand L EM-i already confirmed for right-hand-drive countries, could Proton be coming up with its own version? It certainly seems likely – remember, the national carmaker did tease an eMas sedan during the launch of the sub-brand in 2024.

Could this be what the Proton eMas version will look like?

Photoshop wizard Theophilus Chin has come up with renders of just such a car, which he has dubbed the eMas 8 PHEV. The big difference (aside from the badges, of course) is a new grille that replaces the Mercedes-AMG-style “waterfall” unit in favour of one with diamond-shaped chrome pins, à la the S70.

This, by the way, is not the first time Geely is launching its own RHD version of its cars in other markets ahead of Proton in Malaysia – that honour belongs to the Starray EM-i, which eventually became that eMas 7 PHEV. Given that, it’s unclear if Proton still collaborates with Geely on the conversion work for its eMas models, as once claimed by subsidiary Pro-Net.

  • Federal Highway bike lane crash – road safety experts call for skid tests on green-paint surface treatment

Federal Highway bike lane crash – road safety experts call for skid tests on green-paint surface treatment

Questions have been raised about the safety of the painted stretch of the Federal Highway motorcycle lane near Subang during wet weather following a mishap involving multiple motorcycles. In a video posted on Threads, several motorcycles can be seen lying on the lane after their riders skidded and lost control on the stretch.

According to the post accompanying the video, the incident allegedly occurred during rainfall and was the second such incident at the location, the New Straits Times reports. The footage has prompted questions over whether the painted surface provides sufficient grip in wet conditions,

The footage has prompted questions over whether the painted surface – intended to highlight areas with a higher risk, including bends and exit lanes, alerting motorcyclists to exercise greater caution – provides sufficient grip in wet conditions. The incident has prompted road safety experts to call for skid-resistance tests to be carried out on the painted surface to establish if the coating used at the location provides sufficient traction under wet conditions.

Federal Highway bike lane crash – road safety experts call for skid tests on green-paint surface treatment

Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) chairman Wong Shaw Voon said that while the idea of having a painted surface to warn riders of an accident-prone zone was good, repeated incidents at the same location warranted serious attention, and that further inspection and testing were needed. “We need to test the skid resistance on both dry and wet surfaces,” he said.

He said that a road’s grip could decline over time as its surface becomes ‘polished’, and warned riders against assuming that a newly painted surface allowed them to travel faster. “You cannot say, ‘Now I’m on a new road, so I can drive fast’,” he said, adding that taking a bend at high speeds causes a loss of grip regardless of surface quality, and regaining control is difficult once that happens. He added that many small motorcycles lack anti-lock braking systems (ABS), increasing the risk of wheel lock when braking while cornering.

While the video alone was not enough to prove the paint caused the falls, Universiti Putra Malaysia road safety research centre head Law Teik Hua said there does appear to be a legitimate safety concern following repeated loss-of-control incidents. He recommended a technical inquiry to assess whether the painted surface was slip-resistant enough under wet conditions, particularly during braking, acceleration or turning.

Federal Highway bike lane crash – road safety experts call for skid tests on green-paint surface treatment

He said friction on the painted surface and adjacent bare asphalt should be measured and compared under wet conditions, along with factors such as drainage, surface texture, contamination, tyre condition, speed and rider paths.

“Research suggests that macrotexture is highly significant for wet performance since the texture allows effective drainage at the tyre-pavement contact patch. If the colour application shows significantly poorer wet friction performance compared to asphalt, the treatment area should not be applied at the bends. Alternatively, the application design could be revised to ensure satisfactory wet friction performance,” he said.

Following the incident, works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the public works department (JKR) was examining the site to determine why the riders lost control at the section, and promised swift remedial action. It was indicated that the stretch on the motorcycle lane where the incident occurred will be resurfaced and fitted with a 40 km/h speed sign as an immediate mitigation measure.

  • Nissan Z Kaze revealed at ZCon – concept with 90s tuner vibes, custom T-top roof, GReddy and Nismo parts

Nissan Z Kaze revealed at ZCon – concept with 90s tuner vibes, custom T-top roof, GReddy and Nismo parts

Nissan has released a new concept car at this year’s ZCon, an annual event where enthusiasts of the brand’s Z cars gather and celebrate the famed nameplate. Called the Z Kaze (translates to ‘wind’ in Japanese), the passion project is based on the seventh-generation Z car, which is simply called the Z (or Fairlady Z in Japan and Indonesia).

Built to celebrate 90s tuning culture, the concept’s defining feature is its custom-engineered T-top roof with removable sections for an open-top driving experience. According to Nissan, the team behind the concept decided to chop up the Z’s roof following the “vision of an exhilarating drive along California’s Pacific Coast Highway on a perfect summer day.” It also neatly serves as a homage to later versions of the 280SX and both generations of the 300ZX, which were offered with a T-top.

The concept’s Pacific Teal paint scheme complements the open-top coastal driving inspiration, while the carbon-fibre vented bonnet, fender flares and aero kit are nods to the import tuner car scene of the period. A set of authentic, restored 18-inch Nismo LMGT2 wheels measuring 10 inches up front and 11 inches in the back complete the exterior.

Inside, the Z Kaze features custom white leather seats as well as carbon-fibre accent trim, the latter to match the exterior. There are also Bose Personal Plus headrest speakers in the otherwise stock cabin, which Nissan says serve to ensure occupants can enjoy playlists while the roof is removed.

Nissan also worked with GReddy to tune the concept, which gets a Supreme SP exhaust system, a front-mounted air-to-air intercooler and an Airin air filter kit. These mods presumably result in more power from the 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6, although Nissan didn’t disclose figures. Other mechanical changes include a variety of Nismo components to upgrade the car’s suspension.

Federal Highway bike lane crashes spark JKR probe

Several motorcyclists lost control and crashed on the Klang-bound Federal Highway motorcycle lane yesterday near Subang Jaya, prompting JKR to investigate the cause and begin remedial works. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said JKR immediately installed “SLOW DOWN” signs and conducted skid-resistance tests under dry and wet conditions.

He said the cause has not been established, with the technical investigation focusing on surface grip, pavement condition and possible oil or diesel contamination. Riding speed and traffic conditions are also being considered.

Nanta said preliminary information showed the green-painted surface was designed and installed as an anti-skid finish according to prescribed specifications. Light rain was falling when the crashes occurred. JKR will carry out mill-and-pave works at the location and install a 40 km/h advisory speed limit sign.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi riding the Federal Highway motorcycle lane in August.

“If the investigation finds weaknesses in the materials, work implementation, design or maintenance aspects, we will take the necessary corrective action,” Nanta said in a post on social media. A 42-second video of the incident circulating on-line shows several motorcycles lying along the Klang-bound motorcycle lane, with multiple riders gathered at the roadside after the crashes.

Nanta previously said the Works Ministry was working to improve motorcycle routes, including motorcycle specific lanes to improve safety for riders. Measures included upgrading motorcycle lanes that have been neglected or are no longer safe for use, including improvements to lighting and drainage systems.
