Conozca de qué trata el Acuerdo BBNJ, qué regula y cuáles son algunos de los efectos de su entrada en vigor en Costa Rica, Panamá y Colombia, y en la altamar.
Es bióloga graduada de la Universidad de Panamá, con énfasis en biología marina y limnología. Desde pequeña, siempre me ha fascinado la naturaleza, disfrutar de momentos al aire libre junto a mi familia y amigos. Esta conexión temprana me permitió comprender la importancia del cuidado y conservación de nuestros recursos naturales, motivándome a dedicar mi vida profesional a aquello que me apasiona. En los últimos años, he participado activamente en iniciativas de conservación. He sido voluntaria en una fundación dedicada a la protección de tortugas marinas y he colaborado con una organización enfocada en el estudio y conservación de los mamíferos marinos en Panamá. Además, he trabajado en el levantamiento de datos para la caracterización de fauna y flora, contribuyendo a la creación de líneas base biológicas para estudios de impacto ambiental.
Disfruto compartir con mi familia, me gusta realizar actividades al aire libre, como explorar cascadas, descubrir nuevos lugares, practicar parapente y buceo. Lo que más valoro de mi profesión es la oportunidad de contribuir al cuidado y conservación de los recursos marinos costeros. Me gusta el intercambio de conocimientos con las comunidades y el aprendizaje mutuo que se genera en cada interacción, poder aportar de cierta manera a las comunidades me reconforta. Sean has 30 years of experience in sustainable development. He leads the advisory board of VIVA Trust, a trust created in 2003 that combines productive assets with philanthropic impact to benefit the people of Latin America.
He served as executive director of Avina Foundation from 2006 to 2012 and chaired its board from 2013 to 2024.
He serves on the boards of Ikatú Ventures and World-Transforming Technologies (WTT), both ventures that achieve impact through innovation. With a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Texas at Austin, he is the author of ColaborAcción: A Practical Guide to Promoting Sustainability.
Sean tiene 30 años de dedicarse al área de desarrollo sustentable. Preside el comité asesor de VIVA Trust, un fideicomiso creado en 2003 que une activos productivos e impacto filantrópico para beneficiar a las personas de América Latina.
Se desempeñó como director ejecutivo de Fundación Avina de 2006 a 2012 y presidió su directorio de 2013 a 2024.
Forma parte de las juntas de Ikatú Ventures y World-Transforming Technologis (WTT), ambos emprendimientos que logran impacto a través de la innovación. Con maestría en la planificación urbana por la Universidad de Texas en Austin, es autor del libro ColaborAcción: una guia práctica para la promoción de la sustentabilidad.
Ligia Rodríguez holds a degree in Law and Political Science from the Universidad Latina de Panamá, and a Master’s degree in Environmental Management from the Universidad Latinoamericana de Ciencia y Tecnología. She has 20 years of experience in issues related to the management, defense and strengthening of the legal framework linked to aspects of environmental protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, capacity-building actions both in the institutional and non-governmental spheres, also participating in publications related to inter-institutional coordination, public-private collaboration, marine pollution by disposable plastics and fisheries legislation in Panama.
She is Legal Advisor of Fundación MarViva in Panama, where she participates in the execution of projects related to the problem of marine pollution by disposable plastics, the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and initiatives that contribute to strengthening the sustainable management of marine-coastal areas and their resources.
Ligia Rodríguez es Licenciada en Derecho y Ciencias Políticas de la Universidad Latina de Panamá, y Magíster en Gestión Ambiental de la Universidad Latinoamericana de Ciencia y Tecnología. Cuenta con 20 años de experiencia en temas relacionados con la gestión, defensa y fortalecimiento del marco legal vinculado a aspectos de protección ambiental de ecosistemas terrestres y marinos, acciones defortalecimiento de capacidades tanto en el ámbito institucional como no gubernamental, participando además en publicaciones relacionadas con coordinación interinstitucional, colaboración público-privada, contaminación marina por plásticos desechables y legislación pesquera en Panamá.
Es Asesora Legal de Fundación MarViva en Panamá, donde participa en la ejecución de proyectos relacionados con la problemática de la contaminación marina por plásticos desechables, la lucha contra la pesca ilegal, no declarada y no reglamentada (INDNR), e iniciativas que contribuyen al fortalecimiento de la gestión sostenible de las áreas marino-costeras y sus recursos.
COLOMBIAPolitical Scientist and Anthropologist from the Universidad de los Andes, with a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies and Development from The University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He has nine years of experience working with indigenous, afro-descendant and peasant communities accompanying environmental management scenarios, and diagnosing socio-environmental impacts associated with the armed conflict and conflict resolution in intercultural negotiation scenarios for participatory environmental governance in the Colombian Pacific region.
In his spare time he enjoys playing with his daughter, playing rugby, soccer and dominoes, salsa music and cooking.
One of the things he values most about the work is being surprised each time by the magnitude of the knowledge and wisdom of the people in the Pacific region of Chocó. Listening to the stories of resistance and the local commitment to conservation and defense of the territory has motivated him to place his profession at the service of the people. He is in love with the region and hopes to repay everything it has given him.

Con conocimientos en investigación, monitoreo, diálogos multiactor y análisis de la coyuntura política. Activista en diferentes causas sociales y ambientales.

Gloria has more than 10 years of experience in the interdisciplinary environmental, social and economic approach. She has extensive knowledge in issues related to marine spatial planning; analysis of artisanal and industrial fishing activities, including monitoring, project follow-up and project management, work with Afro-Colombian and indigenous communities and productive associations.
In her work, she enjoys having the opportunity to get to know new places, learn about the cultural and environmental richness of the country, as well as the opportunity to combine technical knowledge with the ancestral knowledge of the communities and contribute to their sense of appropriation.
Working in MarViva means a lot, it is a goal and a great challenge because of its mission of conservation and participatory work and because of the learning it has given her; she wishes to contribute her knowledge in favor of the projects it works on.
Public Administrator and Economist from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia with experience in research, technical assistance and strengthening of value chains of ethnic communities of the Colombian Pacific region. She is convinced of the importance of generating conservation strategies hand in hand with the coastal communities of the country, allowing them to build their own models of sustainable local development.
Addressing local value chains from the perspective of sustainable use of marine-coastal resources implies working permanently in the transformation of community practices and customs that affect the survival of their ecosystems. This is a progressive and long term task, but it is full of learning and small victories, and that is precisely what is most significant about working with MarViva: adapting, learning, unlearning and perceiving firsthand the impact of the actions that are undertaken.
Being part of the MarViva team, being a professional in the area of economic sciences, has given her the satisfaction of putting the economy at the service of nature and the improvement of people’s quality of life.
She enjoys having the beach and the sea as her office, the communities that inhabit it as her work team, and measuring her time according to the tides.
COLOMBIASocial anthropologist from Universidad del Rosario. She is currently completing her master’s degree in Rural Development at the Universidad Javeriana. Her professional experience has focused on the protection and defense of the human rights of historically marginalized communities, and on the research about the forms of local governance regarding natural resources in strategic ecosystems in Colombia.
What she likes about working in MarViva is that conservation is thought of as a participatory process in which management proposals are constructed with the communities that have generated multiple relationships with the territory, and that the objectives of conservation are not solely to guarantee the environmental sustainability of the territory but also the sustainability of the life projects of the communities that inhabit it.
Working in MarViva means advancing in the recognition of community work in these processes and in the construction of conservation models based on social, community, environmental and climate justice. It also means learning from multiple actors in the territories and opening the field of research, public policy and environmental care to the contributions of all interested parties.
COSTA RICA
She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Finance, Banking and Stock Exchange, from Universidad Veritas. She has a Diploma in Accounting from the Technological Institute for Business Administration (Instituto Tecnológico de Administración de Negocios).
With more than 13 years of experience as a financial analyst, she worked for 6 years in private banking and for 5 years in the largest national savings and credit cooperative in Costa Rica. Through this work she obtained experience in both the complete processes of credit analysis, investment portfolio management, preparation and filing of taxes with the Ministry of Finance, customer service, personnel management, and payroll processing.
She has also studied leadership, emotional intelligence, teamwork and interpersonal relations.
Edna is a family woman: she enjoys the company of her children and husband, she loves to cook to please her family. She loves to garden and go to the beach. She is passionate about listening to the stories of older adults, for whom she feels great affinity and respect.

COLOMBIABiologist from Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá, Colombia, with a Master’s in Sustainable Management of Aquatic Resources and a PhD in Aquatic Sciences from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.
She has more than 15 years of experience working for natural resources as a researcher in bio monitoring projects, particularly analyzing the impact of human activities on aquatic ecosystems, as a teacher in schools and universities, and in recent years, as a project manager in organizations dedicated to the protection of the sea, its resources and the human communities that interact with it. She is a devoted mom and culinary apprentice who enjoys books, physical activity, the beach, the mountains and good wine. Her greatest professional motivation is knowing that her work contributes to the sustainable development and progress of the region. Through the projects she works on, she seeks to ensure the fair and sustainable use of marine resources and to reduce social gaps. She sees in MarViva the opportunity to connect the diverse areas of knowledge represented by the excellent professional team, to develop transdisciplinary projects that address the problems of coastal communities and to ensure the protection of the oceans in a comprehensive manner.

REGIONALDr. Erick Brenes holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance with a Master’s Degree in International Management from the Otaru University of Commerce in Japan and a PhD in Economic Development Studies from the University of Calabria. He has extensive experience in areas such as organizational development and strengthening, design and implementation of financial mechanisms for sustainable development and alternative local development.
Dr. Erick Brenes is founder of the Mesoamerican Knowledge Laboratory and the Latin American Observatory for Sustainable Finance. He is an advisor to the UN University for Peace. Throughout his career, he has been a consultant in organizational strengthening, has developed innovative financial instruments for sustainable development and has coordinated, implemented, evaluated and researched local alternative development projects. He is a board member of several companies, organizations and NGOs.
The arrival of Dr. Brenes marks the beginning of a new and fruitful stage in the work that MarViva Foundation has been carrying out for the last 20 years, for the benefit of the marine-coastal biodiversity of our region.

Durante su experiencia profesional, ha sido consultor en fortalecimiento organizativo, ha desarrollado instrumentos financieros innovadores para el desarrollo sostenible y ha coordinado, implementado, evaluado e investigado proyectos de desarrollo local alternativo. Es miembro de juntas directivas de varias empresas, organizaciones y ONG.
La llegada del Dr. Brenes marca el inicio de una nueva y fructífera etapa en el trabajo que ha venido realizando Fundación MarViva por los últimos 20 años, en pro de la biodiversidad marino – costera de nuestra región.

Tiene más de 15 años de experiencia trabajado en pro de los recursos naturales como investigadora en proyectos de bio monitoreo, particularmente analizando el impacto de las actividades humanas sobre los ecosistemas acuáticos, como docente en colegios y universidades, y en los últimos años, como directora de proyectos en organizaciones dedicadas a la protección del mar, sus recursos y las comunidades humanas que interactúan con él. Es una mamá devota y aprendiz de cocina que disfruta los libros, la actividad física, la playa, las montañas y el buen vino. Su mayor motivación profesional es saber que su trabajo contribuye al desarrollo sostenible y al progreso de la región, buscando a través de los proyectos, dar uso justo y sostenible a los recursos marinos y disminuir las brechas sociales. Su experiencia profesional se ha centrado en la protección y defensa de los derechos humanos de las comunidades históricamente marginalizadas, y la investigación sobre formas de gobernanza local de los recursos naturales en ecosistemas estratégicos de Colombia.
Lo que le gusta de trabajar en MarViva es que se piensa la conservación como un proceso participativo en el cual se construyen las propuestas de manejo con las comunidades que han generado múltiples relaciones con el territorio y que los objetivos de conservar no es solo por garantizar la sostenibilidad ambiental del territorio sino también la manutención de los proyectos de vida de las comunidades que lo habitan.
Trabajar en MarViva significa avanzar en el reconocimiento de la labor comunitaria en estos procesos y en la construcción de modelos de conservación basados en justicia social, comunitaria, ambiental y climática. También significa aprender de múltiples actores en los territorios y abrir el campo de la investigación, la política pública y el cuidado del ambiente a las contribuciones de todos y todas las personas interesadas.
Administradora Pública y Economista de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia con experiencia en investigación, asistencia técnica y fortalecimiento de cadenas de valor de comunidades étnicas del Pacífico colombiano. Tiene la convicción de la importancia de generar estrategias de conservación de la mano de las comunidades costeras del país, que les permitan construir modelos propios de desarrollo local sostenible.
Abordar las cadenas de valor locales desde un enfoque de aprovechamiento sostenible de los recursos marino-costeros, implicar trabajar permanentemente en la trasformación de aquellas prácticas y costumbres de las comunidades que afectan la pervivencia de sus ecosistemas; una tarea progresiva y de largo aliento, pero llena de aprendizajes y pequeñas victorias, y es precisamente eso lo más significativo de trabajar con MarViva: adaptarse, aprender, desaprender y percibir de primera mano el impacto de las acciones que se emprenden.

Es Licenciada en Administración de Empresas con énfasis en Finanzas, Banca y Bolsa, graduada de la Universidad Veritas. Posee un Diplomado en Contabilidad del Instituto Tecnológico de Administración de Negocios.
Cuenta con más de 13 años de experiencia como analista financiera; laboró por 6 años en la banca privada y por 5 años en la cooperativa nacional de ahorro y crédito más grande de Costa Rica, obteniendo en ambos experiencia en los procesos completo de análisis de crédito, manejo de cartera de inversiones, elaboración y presentación de impuestos ante el Ministerio de Hacienda, atención de servicio al cliente, en manejo de personal, elaboración de planillas.
Cuenta además con estudios sobre liderazgo, inteligencia emocional, trabajo en equipo y relaciones interpersonales.
Edna es una mujer de familia: disfruta la compañía de sus hijos y esposo, le encanta cocinar para complacer a los suyos. Ama hacer el jardín e ir a la playa. Le apasiona escuchar historias de adultos mayores, por los cuales siente gran afinidad y respeto.

Jorge holds a PhD in marine ecology. His extensive experience in the field has made him a researcher at the School of Biological Sciences, a member of the Postgraduate Academic Committee, coordinator of the Mangrove Forest Ecology and Management Program, and a member of the University Council of the National University of Costa Rica. He has been a visiting professor at institutions in the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia and Europe. He has also worked as an ad-honorem professor of the Postgraduate Studies System and as an associate researcher at the Marine Research Center of the University of Costa Rica.
Before joining MarViva, he worked with the Tropical Agronomic Research and Teaching Center (CATIE) as a specialist in management of mangrove and wild areas. At the Instituto de Forestería Tropical, Puerto Rico, he served as an instructor of the Tropical Forest Management course, and as an instructor in postgraduate courses of the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS), where he is also a member of the assembly and the board of directors. He was director of biological inventories at the National Institute of Biodiversity (INBio), director of scientific programs and general director of the OTS.
His experience in mangrove ecology is summarized in several publications, including maps, technical reports, scientific articles and books. His book “The Mangroves of the Central American Pacific” stands out.
Director of Asuera Stiftung since 2019, a Swiss foundation that is committed to sustainable development and creates opportunities for people to improve their living conditions through their own efforts. Served as a member of the Board of Directors of Avina and as secretary of the Viva Trust.
He is the chairman of the subcommittee for the project to modernize Panama’s marine-commercial legislation. He is the president of the International Bar Association, and a member of the presidential committee for the protection of international and financial services in Panama. He is also a member of the International Maritime Committee. He was head of the Panamanian Association of Maritime Lawyers.
He holds a master’s degree in commercial law from the School of Economics at the University of London, and a bachelor’s degree in law and political science.
He has been a partner at the law firm Arias, Fábrega & Fábrega since 1994. His main areas of work are commercial, corporate and maritime law. He is a private advisor in several fields of expertise: asset management, management and structuring of foundations and trusts, and philanthropic entities, tax planning and corporate consulting. He is also a professional advisor to several NGOs in Panama: MarViva, Avina, América Latina en Acción Solidaria (ALAS), Fundes, Latinoamérica Posible, Red Forum Empresa and Un techo para mi país.
