Wine Review: This brilliant medium ruby Pinot Noir bouquet includes aromas of black raspberry, pomegranate, pencil shavings, tobacco leaf, pastry crust, and a touch of milk chocolate. It is polished and sophisticated on the palate, with a medium body and integrated medium-plus acidity. I found it to be well balanced, juicy, fresh, and layered. There are flavors of pomegranate, lingonberry, tobacco, oak, green tea, and crushed stone along with a note of graphite and hints of baking spice and saline. Gentle tannins linger in the dry finish. Serve with pan-roasted duck breast with a tart cherry reduction. Enjoy - Mark

Winemaker Notes: Our 2024 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a blend of vineyards spread across the AVA from Annapolis in the north, to Occidental in the west, and down to the tip of the Petaluma Gap. Key components from Gap’s Crown, Rodgers Creek, and Nightwing Vineyards are at the core of this blend, providing layers of depth with fresh acidity and silky structure. Pommard, 115, 667, and 777 clones are well represented. 2024 is a very strong year for this wine, offering structure but balanced with nuance and finesse. It possesses a combination of bright red and dark fruit aromas with hints of earth and forest floor. This wine overdelivers for the price.

The fall is a perfect time to plan a visit to Virginia Wine country. Ken and the KWG Tasting Panel have been covering the winning wines from the Virginia Governor’s Cup for years. On Thursday, May 28, 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Jeff Gaffner again. Jeff is the winemaker and owner of Saxon Brown Wines. During the interview, we covered four single-vineyard 2023 Chardonnays, three Pinot Noirs, a cuvee, and two single-vineyard offerings, also from the 2023 vintage.
