Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit impaired action potential firing in sensory neurons and increased mechanical hypersensitivity in neuropathic pain models. Homozygosity for a gain-of-function mutation increases overall excitability of neurons and causes (nocturnal) seizures, hyperactivity and learning deficits.
