Preserving the art and industry of the cast letterform
A century ago, metal type casting and letterpress printing supported nearly every commercial business, newspaper and book publisher. These trade crafts are no longer used in day-to-day business, but their cultural heritage continues to shape our world. And artists continue to use traditional techniques from these trades to make new artwork that speaks to our present and future world.
The C.C. Stern Type Foundry is a non-profit organization that provides public access to the largest collection of type casting equipment, tools and technical manuals in the Pacific Northwest. We are artists, writers, printers, and type casters who are working to share knowledge and preserve cultural heritage in community with other craftspeople. We offer arts and cultural heritage programs that serve printers, designers, literary and visual artists, educators and their students, and the general public.
