EECS Border Firewall Changes, Tues. October 20

On the morning of Tuesday, October 20th, we will be making significant changes to the behavior of the EECS border firewall. For detailed information about these changes, please see our EECS Border Firewall page (this page requires login).

Please email us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have any questions about these changes, especially if you manage any systems which host externally available services.

SSH Connection Issues, 10/8-9

For a period between approximately 10/8 14:50 and 10/9 07:40, we had an error in our firewall configuration which was blocking most SSH connections into the EECS network.

The error has been corrected, and SSH connections should be working as expected at this time. Our current firewall policy is to allow SSH connections inbound from the campus VPN and authenticated wi-fi networks (eduroam and Berkeley-IoT); connections from all other sources are blocked.

Please email us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have any network connectivity issues, or questions about our SSH firewall policy.

Websites being worked on, redirecting here in the meantime

Various websites hosted by EECS department webservice are temporarily being redirected here, to iris.eecs.berkeley.edu, while we continue work on the configuration of our webservers. Staff are working to restore normal webservice as soon as possible.

EECS DHCP Service Restored

We believe that DHCP service for EECS wired networks has been restored as of this afternoon (Friday, August 28).

If you have a system on the wired network which cannot obtain an IP address, even after rebooting, please email dcalderon@berkeley.edu with the system’s MAC address and the cable ID it is connected to. Messages sent to help@eecs may not be received.

Update to nameservers, NTP servers

We have maintained our own recursive nameservers within EECS for many years, enabling client machines to resolve hostnames to IP addresses. These servers also functioned as local NTP (time) servers. In the spirit of simplification, we are retiring these machines and will be utilizing campus servers for these services.

Effective immediately, we are updating our DHCP configuration, to point clients instead to campus nameservers ns1.berkeley.edu (128.32.136.9 and 128.32.206.9) and ns2.berkeley.edu (128.32.136.12 and 128.32.206.12). We are similarly updating the setting for NTP servers, pointing to campus NTP servers ntp1.net.berkeley.edu and ntp2.net.berkeley.edu.

Most machines in EECS are DHCP clients, and will pick up these changes automatically.

If you have statically configured nameservers or NTP servers on your systems, please update your configuration as soon as possible.

CIFS shares from Project/Home unavailable

Windows and MacOS systems use CIFS shares on our NetApp fileservers for home directories and project space. With the sunsetting of our EECS Active Directory, we are in the process of migrating our NetApp to the Campus Active Directory. In that process, we’ve run into some unexpected issues, and are working with campus IT staff to resolve them.

At this time, CIFS shares remain unavailable.

NFS shares, as typically used by Linux/Unix systems in EECS, are not affected.

We apologize for the service interruption. We will continue working with campus staff to restore CIFS service as soon as possible.
