My Love Is Cool

"My Love is Cool" is the debut album by London indie rockers Wolf Alice. Wolf Alice formed in 2010, while this album came out in 2015. They are a band I have always been aware of and back in 2018 I did see them when they supported the Foo Fighters. Here is an extract of the live review I did for that gig talking about their performance: "They do seem like a hype band amongst the alternative music press. Personally, I didn't think the sound setup was that good for them which didn't do them any favours. They were ok but I can't see myself investigating their stuff any further. ". And I didn't investigate them any further. Well, that's up until a month ago when I heard their single from their up-and-coming 3rd album "Blue weekend" and the track "Smile". This pulled me in and before long I ordered their first 2 albums. And for the last month I have been listening to Wolf Alice more than any other band.

The first song I want to talk about off "My Love is Cool" is 3rd track off the album "Your Loves Whore". This song is 4 minutes and 57 seconds long. But it feels like there is a million and one different ideas crammed into the one song. And somehow, they have crafted it in a way that not only does it make sense but it is an absolute masterpiece of indie rock gold. They have played about with the song structure the way the likes of Biffy Clyro do but in their own way. Those effective pauses through the versus and towards the end of the song Ellies vocals which feel like they are more carefree are some of my favourite moments from the track. Another is just how pronounced the bass is. Often the bass is there just to glue the song together and you don't really notice it. But here Wolf Alice use it and it often can be seen in the foreground of the song which gives them another outlet.

While "Your Loves Whore" is my favourite song off the album, this is an album that I am enjoying immensely. And seeing that the album has been certified gold in the UK and reached number 2 in the charts in the UK it is clear other folk do agree. It is quite a diverse album too. "Giant Peach" for example is one of the heavier tracks on the album and has more of a punky, carefree kind of feel to it. While "Swallowed Tail" has drummer, Joel Amey take up lead vocals, giving Ellie a rest. This track is a slower downbeat track which has a false ending before kicking in with a splendid outro to the track. The likes of "Silk" and "Bros" are great singles. "Fluffy" and "Freazy" feel like sister tracks.

In all, I got it wrong with Wolf Alice, this is not a hype band. This is the real band. They have a great vocalist in Ellie Rowsell. Their songs can be complicated when you investigate them but on the surface, they are outstandingly brilliant. I now can't wait for their 3rd album "Blue Weekend" to come out and looking forward to getting my teeth sunk into 2nd album "Visions of a life" a bit more too.

I've only just got into this band, it's what old hippies do, stubbornly refuse to listen to new music, well, new to me! I love them and I'll be investigating more.😊

To my tastes this is a real mixed bag. I want to like it more than i do but it's missing something that makes that 'connection' (to quote an elastica song). I think what lets this album down for me is the loud tracks - they don't sit right somehow. So, You're A Germ, Lisbon, Giant Peach & Fluffy stop me from getting a foot hold (or ear hold) during a start to finish listen. The not-so-hidden hidden bit of Wonderwhy is a bit naff, and a curious way to close proceedings. Still, the rest of the songs are really good but as an album, it won't be one i reach for too often. Another band who's missed an opportunity to create something lasting? we'll see where they go from here, i guess.

Recently revisted this, but the US version instead, which has 'Moaning Lisa Smile' as track 4. This addtional track massively helps the flow of the album.

I've been a fan of Wolf Alice for sometime now and have eagerly awaited the first album. It's been a nervous wait because I've been somewhat disappointed with quite a few first or second albums by my favourite bands of late. I never should have been worried, for My Love Is Cool is a fantasic opener to what will hopefully be a long list of album releases for Wolf Alice.

My Love Is Cool features twelve songs, each of which could easily fill the role of favourite song on any album. They open with the Blonde Redhead inspired dreamy pop of Turn To Dust before entering into a lovely new version of Bros, one of their early singles. You're A Germ is a punchy mix of early Snow Patrol and The Breeder's Cannonball, and forms the heaviest part of the album along with Giant Peach. Singer Ellie Rowsell was seen on You Tube last year describing Muse's Absolution as her favourite album and Giant Peach is My Love Is Cool's biggest draw from that album, though it also draws on moments of Sonic Youth and Led Zeppelin towards its conclusion.

Freazy is perhaps the album's happiest moment with Roswell brilliantly stating that 'you can hate us all you want, but you don't mean nothing at all'. That'll tell the critics, then. Swallowtail is a beautiful song, splendidly sung by drummer Amey, that builds momentum as it goes, and with Silk you can't help but feel that the band have been listening to Grimes rock her stuff on the synths. By far the best moment of the whole album is Lisbon, in which Rowsell states she's 'been ready for so long', and Wolf Alice have. They've used that time to create a wonderful album.

My Love Is Cool borrows from some of the best material of the past two decades, but Wolf Alice make it their own. The twelve songs are at time shoegaze inspired moments, at times nods of the head to the grunge of the 90s, but each one feels new. For me, this is the album of the decade so far, and one of the best debuts ever. Buy it now and never regret it. My Love Is Cool is an album not to be missed.

This is the first time I've truly fallen in love with an album for many years. I've read a review or two where people have said that Wolf Alice takes them back to the 90s and a time where music meant something. I imagine them all to be like me, early 40s and in search of something that resonates and is new but somehow reminiscent of sounds from our past. And that is what all great art does. It's familiar but new. It is also varied. Too many bands have a distinct sound but never change it up and demonstrate that they have more than one string to their bow. I will name no names but in the case of some bands you can listen to a whole album and like it, but barely notice a distinct difference between where one track ends and another begins. I love every track on My Love is Cool. I can't remember saying that of any album in a long time, but I also love that there are so many things going on here. There are so many different sounds on one album, sometimes even within one song. I'm somewhat out of my depth here when it comes to music knowledge. I am not going to pick out each instrument on each track. Read an NME review for that sort of thing. What you get here is 12 tracks with absolutely no filler because each one seems unique and yet you would know it's a Wolf Alice song without a doubt, whether they play poppy or grungy.

It's also worth noting that when you have 12 tracks that you love there is a massive decline in skipping tracks and you find yourself listening from start to finish. It reminds me of how much I used to appreciate that someone took the time and effort to consider the track order. Ever left a concert thinking that the last song the band played was a great track to end the night on? Same thing with albums. When you get to the last track The Wonderwhy I feel that, like the album, they threw everything into that track.

I had begun to think that my inability to find an album I loved all the way through was due to modern tech making life too easy to skip to my favourite track. It turns out that if you have 12 great tracks all in the right order you forget where the skip button is.

Another reason why I also had the Nineties flashback is that lyrically I have to say that this is great for one strange reason. I should precis this by saying that I grew up listening to New Order as a teen and had no idea what they were singing about or what they were even singing until I got my hands on the lyrics to read. As a writer I find this hard to say, but in the case of music it is often the case that you like the way something sounds before you ever know what is being sung. Memories of parents complaining that they couldn't tell what those grunge artists were on about. Why couldn't Nirvana enunciate better? We didn't need to know exactly what was being said. We just knew that something smelt like teen spirit. Who cared? Well, maybe I secretly did, nosing through the lyrics in the CD cover.

I could rant and rave forever but ultimately I have to say that I actually didn't think I'd ever come across new music that I would feel this way about ever again. So, I should be excused my excitability here. I have had many a discussion about how music isn't written for me anymore. I am not the right demographic. Or so I'm told. Wolf Alice prove to me that good music has no demographic. So, it is possible to be twenty one or double that age and know that should anyone choose to lecture you telling you they've heard this all before that you can tell them that that's the beauty of it, to be familiar but new and unique. And I can only hope it grows from here.

This album has a lot going for it, but for me the best thing is the variety. So many albums nowadays have 12 songs of the same style and it's hard to separate one from another. This is different: you probably won't like every one but you get a really varied menu. I love the vocals - very sweet and pure in the quiet songs but powerful and gutsy in the rockers. I only bought it as they are playing support at one of the Hyde Park concerts I'm going to this summer and thought I'd like to know their music, but to be honest this is better than the latest album by the headline act. If, like me, you think that "modern music isn't what it used to be", then buy this album. And one last thing - you can actually read the lyrics on the sleeve notes! Why do most bands now give you sleeve note lyrics in pseudo handwritten style that are impossible to decipher? Can't wait to see them live.

When i saw them on The cover of The NME is was not sure they would be thi good. This is Really The best band I have Heard in years. The record is just as good as what i saw on youtube. Live they are amazing. This is a band with a very clear and advanced understanding of Their Music. It is in parts very influenced by My bloody valentine, Nirvana or Mazzy star but is in parts better than Any of those. It is very musical and uplifting as well as well played. They both know How to rock out and play intimare songs. It is Hard to know IF they Will be able to go Any further because now this record is already perfect.

buenas canciones, energia...pausas.. un grupazo... hace mucho tiempo no escuchaba algo tan bueno. Su segundo disco,segun dicen, será mas rockero. en fin...muy recomendable.
